Quick question - is £325.21 a lot for an electricity bill for a 2 person, 1 baby household for 2 months usage?

I know costs have gone up but this seems like a lot to me. I don't normally deal with bills but DP is away so I opened it.

Basically DP has the tumble drier on for each wash - I always complain about the environment and would prefer to line dry but he does the washing a lot of the time so my laziness wins out.

Yes that is alot but then a tumble dryer can be very expensive so this may explain it....

Nbg · 12/04/2008 12:25

My friend has just had hers and it was £250.
There is only herself and her dd.

The prices have shot up ridiculously

ColumboGoesBananas · 12/04/2008 12:33

Just realised it is a dual bill for gas and electric

But I am still going to line dry from now on, and change us to an eco electricity supplier.

we pay £22 a month but we have gas heating, cooker, and water

we pay about £35 a month gas if that helps

at this time of year when colder I would imagine it would be more, but it does sound stupendously big

FrannyandZooey · 12/04/2008 12:35

oh it's a dual bill
it still sounds a lot tbh
sorry, what a shock to open that one!

ScoobyDoo · 12/04/2008 12:35

We have dual fuel & pay £60 a month by direct debit.

heronsfly · 12/04/2008 12:37

Thats huge, ive got a key meter, they are more expensive to start with,I put about 12 pounds a week on it, and have my tumble dryer on constantly

morocco · 12/04/2008 12:50

is it a guesstimate? ours are always well out. does sound a lot, how does it compare with other months? maybe you are paying off a previous debt as well? (sorry, just trying to guess why it would be so much). we pay about £60/month dual

RustyBear · 12/04/2008 12:59

If you've been on estimates for a while & then get the meter read it can be pretty big if you've increased your use - we have a 4 bedroom house & with 2 teenagers, so we tend to user a lot of electricty - we pay £114 a month for electricity plus £58 for gas - the electricity has gone up from £70-odd since last year.

DaisySteiner · 12/04/2008 13:02

Check your meter readings to see if they tally. Also check that your previous bills haven't been estimates and this bill doesn't include underpayments because of this.

If not, and this is truly just 2 months usage I would say that sounds weirdly high, even taking into account price increases. We average £50 a month during the winter, obviously less during the summer for a 6 person household (but then I was jammy and managed to find a plan which was cheaper than our previous one and was price-fixed until Nov this year )

popsycal · 12/04/2008 13:11

That is HUUUUUGE

popsycal · 12/04/2008 13:12

we pay around 50 quid a month - inclduing gas and electric.
Have a tumble drier until recently
2 adults and 2 children

popsycal · 12/04/2008 13:13

3 bed house, computer, washer, drier on a LOT!
Use heating when we need it

TheFallenMadonna · 12/04/2008 13:14

It's high. We pay less and we are paying off a fairly hefty accumulation due them not setting up our direct debit for 5 months after we moved in(grrrrrr).

ColumboGoesBananas · 12/04/2008 14:06

It is definately only for usage since Feb, our last bill from them was over £600. Seriously. Which was paid, so its not an amalgamation. And the meter was read in Feb, then again on 8th April...

sparkleymummy · 14/04/2008 13:09

We have a large 5 bed house. I'm on mat leave so home all day and tumble dryer is on every day.

My bills are about £75 per month for gas and £50 per month for electricity through the winter.

popsycal · 14/04/2008 13:14

I am with powergen - now known as eon

I would recommend uswitch.com to help find what is best for you

pollythepolarbear · 15/04/2008 20:57

We're with eon, got bills last week and gas and electricity cost us £370 for 12 weeks.

We're 2 adults and 1 baby/1 toddler in a 3 bed terrace but also use tumble dryer for every wash (and we do a LOT of washes) and also have an oil heater for baby's room on all night as it gets down to 12 degrees otherwise.

We bought the tumble dryer and the heater around the same time and the next electricity bill we got was about double what ours used to be for that time of year. Read somewhere a while ago that our tumble dryer costs 50p a time, so have just worked out that costs us on average £30 a month!
