Do I need to tell my insurance company?

Yesterday a car hit my car in carpark of supermarket and then drove off. I got the registration number and told police. Not much damage done - just a few deep scratches on bumper. Do I need to tell my insurance company? If I tell them will it affect my future premiums? I don't think I'd be gong through them to get it fixed - but could there be implications later on if I don't tell them??

Thanks for your help

DH (chartered insurer) says no need to inform them.

ta - folk in work filling me full of horror stories where similar situation and then other driver comes back at later date claiming that they were hit - and problems because insurance company not informed at the time, or where minor damage turns out to be more serious

If it makes you feel better you could always call your insurer and tell them what happened. As you are not making a claim it will not affect your premium, but at least you will know it is logged and they can make a note of the police report number for future reference.

bums - don't have a police report number - told policeman I wouldn't be going through my insurance. Think I'll phone insurance - tell them what happened and if I need a report number I can get it later. thanks

yes u should and report it as "information only" as just incase the other driver (third party) accused you for the incident. I used to work in a motor claims dept and we get this quite a few times and suddenly the third party start ringing up and may accused you.

It wont affect your premiums if youre not claiming thru your insurance but at least youre being honest to your insurer of what had happened.

And it may be more than a few deep scratches.
