HMRC help

Last year my dh got a pay rise which took him just over the threshold for child benefit. I said he needed to register for self assessment for tax, so I could still claim it. He's earning just over the 50k cap, I know it's now just gone up.

Anyway, since filling in the self assessment, he's had 3 different tax bills, one for tax year 2022-23, which he didn't even earn over the threshold, they've just found missing tax, but he's a PAYE. Plus a bill for 2023-24, and an amount for overdue, because he missed the deadline, because he signed up early, not realising, he'd then have to file his tax assessment for the year 2022-23, when he wasn't actually earning over the threshold. He got his pay rise at the end of that tax year.
I hope this is making sense.

So now we're owing HMRC over £1500

Is there anything we can do? We only wanted to do the right thing!!

The overdue amount because he missed a deadline will be his own error and repayable and the amount you claimed that your not entitled too now will also have to be paid back, which probably makes up the charge.

If you owe it you owe it im afraid. You can call them and arrange a payment plan.
