We moved address and notified the ater company, final bill of £90 along with all the other final payments moving out and a family and everything else it got missed a reminder was sent to the new address, paid the bill before the given date, a genuine mistake,

Now a deadault has been added, we have moved back in with parents to save for our own home after renting and now it's left me devestated we have never ever ever missed any payments on anything in 15 years,

I wasn't notified of a default being added, I looked on there website and it stated we will always write to you to notify you, we have had no correspondence of this what so ever,

We have a postal redirect and changed the addrsss anyway,

I'm so upset can anyone help 😔

Your husband’s credit will bounce back quickly, these things happen. Don’t apply for any new lending for a few months and make sure all bills are paid on time and you will be fine.

You could contact the utility company and complain they hadn't advised you of the default.

A default stays on a credit record for 6 years (but the impact on the score won’t be as bad as if he had a CCJ, for example, or if the debt remains unpaid). If I was you I would contact the water company, pay the debt, explain my mistake and ask them to write to all the credit rating agencies and ask them to remove the default from their records. They CAN do that. If they refuse make a complaint. Explain that a default for a £90 debt which accrued as a mistake is a disproportionate penalty which may impact your husband’s ability to borrow money in the future.

(but between you and I please don’t be worried even if the default doesn’t get removed from his file. The default won’t affect the credit rating too much and if he is to apply for a loan in the future the underwriter will see that he paid the debt - plus he can explain what happened)
