Help business electricity!

Disproportionately problematic because it involves an elderly parent!

If the standing charge is £2 a day and the electricity used is 20p a day, is there any way round that?

Mum is fretting massively.

It's the staircase light, so used very briefly particularly at this time of year.
I don't think you can swap suppliers the way you can with domestic.

Am I missing something? I promised her I'd look into it. Again.

Thank you!

Why is it on business electricity?

KeirSpoutsTwaddle · 04/07/2024 08:25

She owns a set of four flats which share a staircase.
The flats are on domestic rates. The staircase is business.
Dad managed everything but has died. Mum struggles.

Yes you can change business electricity. However from experience they tend to have higher standing charges in general and lower ppkwh.

Thank you.

I’m feeling pretty stupid- I rang the supplier 5 years ago and they told me they were the only available option.

I just found a comparison site that are sure they can get it down to 60p a day.

I feel bad for my mum now as I’ve been telling her there’s no choice.

To be honest there was so much to sort out at the time, maybe I was rushing and misunderstood.

Yes you can change suppliers. Google business electricity quote and out your details in. Make sure you have some actual readings to work with though. Also is the light a manual switch or sensor or timer? If manual you'll always get the ones who want to leave it in all the time. Also worth considering upgrading light/bulbs - led saves a fortune.

KeirSpoutsTwaddle · 04/07/2024 09:05

Thank you. I think it’s upgraded already- and the fuel is £50 a year so insignificant.

Mind the fuel comparison site is getting it down to 60p a day and 27p a unit, so a massive saving. Doh.

Thank you. Just need to switch now.

I work with a lot of managing agents that manage big blocks of flats that pay for electricity in communal areas. It's one of the things that I always check because it should be residential rates, so not only do you get different rates, but VAT is charged at 5% rather than 20%.
