Credit card fraud

user4589008 · 28/06/2024 19:24

My mum has just had her credit card statement and it shows 4 fraudulent transactions from amazon on various dates in the past month.
She doesn't have an amazon account and she only ever uses her card in stores, her card is always with her she wouldn't leave it unattended.
How has someone got her credit card details?

It doesn’t really matter, what’s important is that she rings her bank, gets the card stopped and identifies the fraudulent transactions so that their fraud team can investigate.

Just call the fraud number on the back of the card, and they will refund and then block Amazon. It’s really easy to put this right

but horrid to have it happen

She has contacted the bank and card is cancelled and they are investigating, she is just worried how someone got her details, she doesn't use the internet and would never give card details over the phone.

Card cloning can be done by any machine you tap or put your card in, so not her fault at all.
we had ours cloned by a local garage when we bought petrol

My card was cloned when I stayed in a hotel in central London for a night. My bank was on the ball and blocked the card because they recognised my spending pattern and that I only ever used my card locally. So she doesn't have to have used the internet.

Has she given it to anyone to put in card machine, or purchased anything else online. A friend of mine had various amounts taken out of her credit card from America, luckily she was on holiday in the med using her card, so CC Company knew she couldn’t be in 2 places. It took her about 6 months to get the money off her account, My DH gave his card over to pay a bill in a pub, when he got his statement, it had been used several times around that area, his CC Company believed him and credited his account. Has your Mum reported it.

Edited

I never knew card cloning can be done with a tap, would they use a different machine or can they clone from the one set up in a shop?

No she doesn't use the internet and she hasn't given it to anyone to put into the machine, but she has put it in her self a few times at the supermarket and also at a restaurant.

Depending on where you live, someone walking past within a couple of metres could clone your card with the right equipment (RFID reader). Carry a RFID blocker card in the same wallet/purse/phone case where you keep your card.

Doesn't stopped hacked machines cloning but at least it's an easy safety measure otherwise.

It’s more common to be stolen from by someone you know rather than a card being cloned. It may be worthwhile having a look at who has unrestricted access to your mums house.

I've been phoned by my bank, Santander, twice in the last 6 months becuase of transactions they thought were dodgy. One was Amazon the other showed up as travel company - flights.

In both cases I was refunded and the card cancelled/replaced.

They have info on their system more or less immediately. Going through recent x/actions at 9pm they could see that I'd used my card in a cafe a couple of hours earlier.
