UC / Tax credit question

I made a claim for UC on Tuesday this week after receiving a migration letter.
I know tax credits stop when you claim but I received my tax credits today, I have no more upcoming tax credits according to my HMRC account.
Does anyone know if tax credits are paid in arrears so I would be entitled to this weeks money or could it be that I applied after they had processed this weeks payment and will need to pay it back. I've put it in a separate account for now so I don't spend it, I won't have time to call them today so wondered if anyone knew. Thanks

The system should mean that as soon as you apply for UC a stop order goes to HMRC closing the TC claim effective the day before your UC claim was started.

It's fairly common for payments already in process when you apply for UC to arrive a day or two later.

Now the claim is closed HMRC will finalise the amount to check that what you've been paid this financial year correctly reflects earnings etc. That may find money due either way.

This happened to me last week. I didn't get tax credits this week though and just received a statement with that ammount included as an over payment.

Thank you both, that's helpful. @bettycat81 how do you pay the overpayment back do you just call and make payment over the phone?

The letter doesn't say so I'm waiting to see if it will come out as a deduction...

Thank you, I'm hoping I can just pay it back rather than a deduction as I will probably have to get an advance off them and will have that as a deduction.
