How to claim a deferred new state pension? Which number? Anyone been through the process?

Asking for a relative who was invited to claim their new state pension in 2020 but who decided to defer as they were continuing to work and wanted to hold off claiming for a while.
They were unaware that you could call the Future Pension Centre before reaching pension age for a pension forecast. They were in the dark as to how to get this info once turning pension age, and then of course it was too late. Last year, they contacted the Pension Service on several numbers and were promised a deferred new state pension statement in the post within 6 weeks. Nothing came. They repeated this exercise 4 times and the last time they did the advisor said there was no record of the previous three calls requesting information but that she would personally ensure the information was sent. In fact, she said she was doing it as they spoke. Again, absolutely nothing despite all personal details given being correct!

This information was important as they were contracted out in the workplace for a time - only several years but clearly it could make a difference to what they may be eligible for in terms of the new state pension.

My relative is fortunately still working - though they hope to reduce their hours - and has now decided to just claim blindly as they feel they have no choice. Problem is, there seems to be a lot of confusion online as which number to call to claim a deferred new state pension. There is definite info as to which number to call or online form to fill in if you are due to reach state pension age in the next four weeks and want to claim, but no real guidance as to which number to call if the pension has been deferred.

I saw a post online (dated just ten days ago) where one person said they'd been assured their claim for a deferred pension (granted, it was basic, not new) was being processed after filling in a form but they were still waiting four months later. They have since written several letters, made multiple calls and were even considering visiting the the pension offices in Wolverhampton. This person's experience does not seem to be unique.
I've read of lots of cases where people are struggling to claim their state pension, are being passed from pillar to post, and are waiting an absolute age...
What on earth is going on?

Oddly, there seem to be two phone numbers for the Pension Service: 0800 731 0469 and 0800 731 7898

My relative is going to call next week to try to claim their deferred new state pension and would like to know: if anyone here has similarly deferred claiming their new state pension for several years and then successfully claimed it, which number did they ring?
When my relative was - as it turns out, unsuccessfully - trying to get info about how much they would get before deciding whether or not to claim, they were passed between both of the above numbers.

I would really appreciate hearing if anyone here has been through the process and how they managed to actually claim their deferred new state pension? Also, how long was the wait between claiming and receiving the pension?

Sorry this is long, just trying to be as detailed as possible in the hope some one can help. Thanks in advance.

Pension predictions are available on line via the government gateway.

Does that help?

What year was your friend born?

Once you make a claim I'm not sure the fact it was deferred makes any difference. My DP took hers at first opportunity and it couldn't have been much simpler. She just did all the stuff on line - or rather I did it for her.

@Bromptotoo

Thanks. I know about the Government Gateway but she doesn't have a valid passport or a driving licence so it makes things less straightforward, I think. She's not very computer savvy. I'm not either, if I'm honest. She explained to the DWP when she phoned them that she would have difficulty setting up GG and they seemed to think they could provide her with the info she needed anyway. She tried 4 times and despite reassurances she'd hear in six weeks, nothing ever came.

She was born in 1954 and was invited to claim in Sept 2020. She didn't as she was still working and wanted to leave it for a while. I wonder if it is more straightforward if you claim when first invited, rather than deferring, though, like you say, I can't see why it should be. I've just read a lot online recently and heard here and there how people are having real difficulties claiming their state pension for one reason or another.

Would you mind if I asked when you partner claimed? Was it pre-Covid? I'm wondering if things are more difficult since Covid eg more people wfh, staff shortages, possible less staff training for newer employees etc. Whenever she called them re what she'd receive, the left hand didn't seem to know what the right hand was doing.

I just don't want her to get passed from pillar to post when she calls them and have to endure a lengthy wait, with protracted follow-up phone calls for months on end. She's hoping to reduce her work hours asap so getting her pension in a speedy fashion is important.

Honestly can't understand why the guidance isn't better, or why there are two different phone numbers for the Pension Service. Seems like nothing is every straightforward!

Anyhow, thanks for replying. I appreciate it.

Have you tried doing an online claim https://www.gov.uk/get-state-pension

This link has the form to request a state pension forecast I.e. not via gmt gateway. https://www.gov.uk/government/publications/application-for-a-state-pension-statement

Get your State Pension

What you need to do to get your State Pension online.

@Harassedevictee

Thanks. I appreciate your reply. I think the first link is to get a pension forecast which is only available to those who are at least 30 days away from retirement age. My relative reached retirement age in September 2020 so can't apply for this forecast, hence all the messing about trying (unsuccessfully) to get a pension statement after reaching retirement age but before choosing to claim.

Thanks for the other link. I have seen that and that might be the way to go. However, from bits and bobs I've picked up, I don't think it's those who are invited to apply for their pension and choose to get it straightaway who are encountering problems. It seems to be - from what I've read - people, like my relative, who chose to defer applying for a while. Still have no idea why the Pension Service appears to have two numbers. I can't seem to get to the bottom of why this is and how the phone numbers differ in terms of what they help with / provide.

I appreciate your input though thank you!

The only other suggestion is to pop into your local JobCentre Plus, I know that may seem bizarre but they are part of DWP and may have internal contacts that can help.

The pension forecast won't work for you as you are long over pension age. Try calling the number to make a pension claim (from gov uk web site, depends where you live eg Wales)... deal only over the phone, not via a form. They can give a pretty accurate quote on the call and you don't need to actually claim
