potential jury service

Hi, i received a letter yesterday telling me that i'm on the list for potential jurors. I have a holiday booked in June and am worried that i might be called then. I've been told to put the dates of any holidays down. I also have two young children aged 4 and 15 months and have absolutely no childcare for them and also i'm still breastfeeding my 15 month old, just wondering i f i would be exempt on these grounds. Does anyone know?

You can delay your jury service because of your breastfeeding and holidays, but you are not exempt.

There is a good website for jurors, btw.

You can get a deferral for 12 mths, or request to be expempt for this time. I asked for a deferral 12 mths ago for the same reasons you have, then in March had to contact them and ask to be excused for the new dates, as childcare I had set up fell through...I am a SAHM, and my mum and MIL were going to help out, but illness prevented it.

So what would i do about childcare? and does that mean i would'nt have to cancel my holiday?

Hi, I was called for jury service in December a couple of yrs ago.

I managed to get exempted because I work in a sector that is very busy in the run-up to Xmas meaning that it would be difficult to provide cover for me and the fact that I only had part-time child care in place.

Hi getmeouttahere,

So were they ok with the fact that you had no childcare? I have absolutely no one to look after my kids if i had to do it, both my parents are dead. I was wondering if they make you find childcare and then pay the costs for you. I really don't want to have to put my kids to a private nursery or childminder as i suffer from depression and anxiety and i just could'nt handle that. There's also the fact that i still breastfeed my little boy a couple of times throughout the day and want to continue until he is at least 2 years old or older. I feed my DD until she was 3.

To be honest, I was never told whether it was the work thing or the childcare thing that influenced their decision.

But I would feel that you would be viewed very sympathetically with the breastfeeding and especially since you have no EXISTING childcare and would have to start from scratch to find some. Nobody takes finding childcare lightly and it could take several weeks to find a carer you were happy with. I'm sure no jury service provider would be happy to wait around while you did that, its just not practical.
