How much do you pay for roadside asssitance?

I'm with AA and I'm now paying £176 annually. I'm sure it used to be £50!

It does cover my kids and partner too if they are in someone else's car

But no homestart so pretty basic

I have a packaged bank account from Nationwide (Flex Plus) which covers:

  1. roadside assistance inc home cover - me in any vehicle + anyone that drives my own car
  2. worldwide family travel insurance
  3. mobile phone insurance

It is £13/month which is cheaper than what you pay for roadside cover only!

I have made claims on all three policies in the past year and cannot fault them at all.

F0XCUB · 13/06/2024 15:10

Oh my god. I have a nationswide account. I might look into this! Thank you!

Similar, or maybe a bit more, with LV/Britannia. Full cover for two cars with personal cover, homestart and recovery plus European use.

MinervaMcGonagallsCat · 13/06/2024 16:01

Its included as a benefit with my RBS bank account. Along with

mobile phone insurance
travel insurance
emergency boiler cover
airport lounges
and lots of other things.

I have breakdown cover with homestart and it costs me a one-off payment of £36 per year, although I think there's a £40 excess for each call out.
I go on to one of the comparison websites and get it from there. I think my current one is with Eversure. I've only ever used them once and they were ok.

SirAlfredSpatchcock · 13/06/2024 16:13

We've been with the AA since 1996. We've had to call them out a few times over that period, and have been very impressed by their service - they've got us out of a few serious holes.

My DSis used to be with Britannia Rescue when she started driving and, like most of the smaller ones, we discovered that they just act as an insurer/middleman and call out a local garage to come to you - so you're heavily reliant on their skills, honesty, proximity and willingness/capacity to attend; compared with AA patrols who are already out and ready in huge numbers up and down the country, with the same training, no personal advantage in doing a poor job and their only job to attend to breakdowns.

She broke down once and BR sent out a bunch of cowboys, who did a horrendous botch-job; we later learned that their garage was notorious locally for watering down their petrol.

That said, the AA is not cheap at all. I just renewed a couple of days ago and it had gone up - from £227 last year to a requested £318 for this year! We have free 'gold' included home start for being with them for so long, but I think they stopped this for new members a while ago. I expressed dissatisfaction with how much it had gone up and she managed to knock £50 off it, down to £268, which was still high but a very welcome reduction.

We wouldn't be without them, but I would definitely recommend paying annually, if you can, and then phoning them/them phoning you to renew manually, so you can get the artificially-inflated price down considerably. Don't pay monthly, if you can avoid it, as they not only charge you interest but it also rolls over automatically, with no incentive for them to not hike the premium each year if you don't stop them.

Just changed over to the flex plus! Insured from today and cancelled rip off AA. Told the guy on the phone from AA and he said it's a much better level of cover too as it's through them anyway

THANK YOU !!!

Ps you get £200 if you switch to nationwide too but we are already with them anyway

Yes do it! I've just been through it all online and it all sounds really good. Straight forward to swap your flex account to this one. Excellent cover overall.
Guy from AA didn't even try and persuade me to stay. He knew it was much better deal and all the other insurances with it.

Do you mean calling the AA/RAC/Green Flag or whoever if you need their service (as a non-member) or trying to find a local garage that will come out to you yourself?

If the former, do they do PAYG, or is it a case of having to join up on the spot (for the year) - obviously at a considerably hiked price compared with what you'd have paid if you'd joined in advance?

Ah okay! Too late now and I like my other bank anyway! It's our joint account that's with NW, so just changed that one to the flex plus

Look up Martin Lewis - money saving expert - I went with Emergency Assist at his recommendation- about £75 for full cover - also look at Quidco - they used to do good cash back on breakdown cover - worth a look.

spicysamosahotcupoftea · 13/06/2024 16:57

Full cover with RAC (no European though) £86 for the year

Meadowfinch · 13/06/2024 17:04

About the same. That's for Roadside, Homestart, Getting everyone home if the car is unrepairable, and towing the car to the nearest approved repairer if it is.

Mojodojocasahous · 13/06/2024 17:06

Glad you’ve got sorted. It is expecting to buy as a standalone product.

I got mine with my insurance, roadside and home start it was £40

FloofyBird · 13/06/2024 17:13

I used to be with the AA but their prices are now ridiculous imo.

i now use Autoaid £76 a year and that covers

Home assistance – If your car will not start at home
• Roadside assistance
• Nationwide Recovery to any UK destination
• Cover for you as a Person in any eligible vehicle
• Unlimited call outs
• Unlimited claims
• Covers vehicles of any age

Pixiedust1234 · 13/06/2024 17:19

I get mine through my car insurance every year. This time it was an extra £29 on top but can't remember if it's RAC or Green Flag. I must check that Blush

TheOneWithUnagi · 13/06/2024 17:20

I used to switch each year between AA and RAC and used topcashback - got about £50 back each time I took out the policy

I need to look at this

I am with aa but went up to £39 a month 🙀🙀🙀

Green flag does come up quite cheap so will look at that

F0XCUB · 13/06/2024 18:53

Worth also noting with that Flexi Plus account that the mobile phone insurance and travel insurance is for all the family. Kids must be under 23 years old

If only they'd add a few quid on for pets insurance!

We pay around £110pa for Britannia Rescue but that also includes membership to Boundless (was CSMA).

Roadside assistance with recovery to destination of choice, home start and personal cover (OH and I are covered in any vehicle we are travelling in).

Covers all vehicles in the household including our Moho (covered up to 8m & 7.5t) and our classic cars & motorcycles (many other policies have an age restriction).

Been with them for decades and the service is second to none.👍
