Universal credits working

Hi

I claim universal credits, and I work part time in a school.
I'm a single mum with children. Age 14,7 and 4.
I work 20 hours a week (term time only) just wondering when will they expect me to start doing 30 hours a week? Because I will need to change job if I need to do that.

Any ideas? Has anyone been through that with universal credit? Will they make me look for a job elsewhere?

Thank you

Although people talk about hours most things in Universal Credit relate to earnings; multiples of the National Living Wage. The question would be whether you are already earning enough to exceed 30*NLW.

As you have young children your work coach should also ensure that any hours you are required to work fir in with school hours including time to drop off and pick up/

I was going 20 hours a week as a TA, and they made me start going for job appointments every week, when my youngest started school. It was so annoying so now I do the full school day, and that covers the amount I need to earn

Thank you for the update. So do you work 5 days a week now?

Lauralizzie · 17/03/2025 20:24

Yes now I work the full school day, 5 days a week. It’s term time only, but that keeps the job centre off my back x

You actually only need to meet the earnings threshold of 18 hours x min wage to not have appointments but do think about increasing your hours or changing your job as your kids get older as you wont manage well on 20 hours and heavily reduced uc then.
