Put incorrect DOB on app for a new phone contract resulting in decline!

Afternoon everyone just looking for some advice ...

Applied for a new contract (currently sim only with o2 and new one was with ID Mobile) and it declined! Never ever been turned down so major panic ensued.

Anyway got my report from Equifax and all good although amber warning on hard searches as I also renewed broadband under my name in Feb.

After hours of being pissed about on chat and phone with ID Mobile who initially lied through their teeth that no way can they see reasons for decline it turns out they can.

And it's because I did my DOB wrong! What an utter Twat I am.

So - is there anyway to have this search removed off my record? It was Equifax.

They have said they can put through again and highly likely although not guaranteed it will pass. But will show as a third hard search.

I'm so annoyed at myself potentially going from flawless record to one with x 3 hard searches in a few months ... imagining this may cause probs for a while?

Any words of wisdom?

I'm not sure I understand how this is affecting your record as you say Equifax was 'all good'. Do you think being declined by IM will show up later?

If it does and badly affects your score you're entitled to place a notice of correction.

Hello! Thanks for posting ... sorry, in terms of my record I'm more worried that I've gone from one "hard search" on my record (broadband contract) to potentially three if I go ahead with ID mobile as they have to do another ... therefore it looks like a lot of activity over a short time? I guess it's a moot point anyway as whether I go ahead with them or look elsewhere another company will need to a search themselves so I'm in the same boat Confused

Wondering if anyone knows if declined credit shows on a credit record or just the searches themselves?

Thanks I'll check that link out!

Stiiiiiiiil kicking myself. This is what happens when you try and do a million things at once on a bank holiday Grin

So this piece of the link -

Your Notice of Correction should give a clear and accurate explanation of why you consider a piece of data to be incorrect or misleading

Does anyone know, as this isn't the details Equifax hold on me that are incorrect but rather info I provided for a credit search ... would a Notice be appropriate in this case? My instinct is not (unless credit record shows declined apps?) as it was only an issue as data o gave to a company contradicts Equifax

I've never given hard searches a minute's thought when I'm dealing with stuff like changing car insurer or utility provider.

I suspect the capacity for them to cause an issue is overstated. Sure, if they showed you were applying for credit cards like they're going out of fashion then that might be problem. TBH if you've changed your BB provider, and then changed mobile *2 I cannot see that sounding too many alarms.

I don't think hard searches are a problem unless you are planning to go for a mortgage.

tellmewhenthespaceshiplandscoz · 28/05/2024 13:47

Thanks both and rational part of my brain agrees with you. I think it's just thrown me as it's not happened before.

Bit pissed off they need to do search again but again I guess with rational head on, in theory in a 24 hour period circumstances can change so they need to look. Just a bit surprised that a) a date or birth contradiction wouldn't just come out as an automatic referral to check with customer and b) if that's all it is they can't just put through.

Ahh well. Lesson learned in accuracy.

And I guess that for families with several teens with phones potentially needing upgrades close together multiple checks for mobile contracts must be extremely common.

Does anyone know if declines show on a credit record? This happened yesterday and as at lunchtime it's just on Equifax as an application.

I wouldn’t even think about this. Are you looking to apply for a mortgage or large loan soon?

Hi! No plans for any credit whatsoever.

Just a chronic overthinker and worrier Grin
