Child benefit tax charge seems huge for 23/24??

Hi all,

I've just done my tax return for 23/24 to declare Child Benefit payments. As I earn just over 50k I have to pay the high earner tax on child benefit. However I was horrified when it calculated I need to pay back £750!! The benefit received for the year was a total off £1250 so I cannot work out how I need to pay back 60%! For the prior 2 years claiming I have only had to pay back around 30/40%.

Has anyone else had this shock and enquired to HMRC if this is a mistake in the calculations for the 23/24 tax year??

£750 would be about right if you earned £56k, assuming you’re on less it does sound too high. Did you add any benefits this year - private healthcare or company car etc?

It should be 1% for every £100 over £50k
How much did you earn?

Isn’t it over 50k after deductions for pension?
