If I apply for a 0% balance transfer credit card do I need to stipulate the card it's being transfered from? And..

Does it already have to have the full balance on the old card?

Basically I have a card that's high interest that I don't really use because of that.
But I need to use it for something and I've been sent an email offering me a 0% balance transfer for 12 months.

Only I don't want to put the money (£800) on my card before I know it can be switched to 0% for 12 months.

If I apply and am accepted for the 0% can I then use the original card and transfer it?

Please don't judge me, it's a vet bill for something insurance won't cover :(

If you don't pay off your higher interest CC where will you pay the vet bill from?

TheOneWithUnagi · 14/05/2024 16:31

Can't you get a 0% purchase credit card instead?

Miloandfreddy · 14/05/2024 16:32

A 0% purchase card is your best bet here! Also why would anyone judge you?

No, my credit isn't good enough.

I only qualified for a 35%APR one 6 months ago.

I'm building my credit back up after a rough patch.

According to clearscore I'm 0% likely to get any loans.

There's no 0% purchase cards available to me.

The only thing that's showing is several 0% balance transfer

The high interest CC is currently empty.

I don't know what I'll do tbh.

She has full insurance but it's classed as pre existing as we dealt with it before previously.

I’m not sure I understand - do you have two credit cards? If so, yes you can put the £800 on one then apply for the balance transfer to the other, you will need to give the card details so they know where to send the money. If you only have one credit card then you can’t use this offer - some cards (MBNA in my experience) do cash transfers, but if this card doesn’t then it won’t help you.

When you apply for a new credit card they ask you if you want to transfer a balance.

If you say yes they ask you the account number and they put it through for you once you've been accepted, providing its within your credit limit of course!

It then shows up on your first balance statement. And in due course you'll get a statement from your old credit card saying balance zero.

You get 90 days to transfer the debt over so the answer is yes you can do it after, and no you don't have to do it upon application. However if its from the Same card provider as your original card they likely won't allow you transfer. I do it between a high Apr card and a balance transfer card

AlmostAJillSandwich · 14/05/2024 16:54

Yes, you can pay on your original, then balance transfer to your 0% card.
BUT, remember there will be a transfer fee, usually about 3% of the ammount you want to transfer, added on top of the transferred ammount. Also, most cards only let you balance transfer upto 90% of the card limit, so a £1000 limit card, would only let you transfer £900 in balance, some will count the transfer fee into the total 90%, so you'd effectively only be able to move £873 of your actual balance, with the last £27 making it upto £900 being the transfer fee.

Pet insurance is a joke these days tbh, hardly worth the paper it is written on

Lots of cards have their own brand names but are owned by another brand name bank. Obviously my mind has gone blank, but if you have 5k on a FinancialFiasco credit card, and FinancialFiasco was bought by CreditScoreChaos! last year, you can’t get a CreditScoreChaos balance transfer and move your FinancialFiasco debt onto it, because you’re just moving it around inside the same company. Does that make sense?

So before you take out the balance transfer card check that it and your existing credit card have different parent banks.

Thankyou. That's very helpful.

It's between Capital one and Virgin (0%)

Well I just did the 'eligibility' thing and apparently I'm not eligible for any of them anyways.

My credit scores gone up in the last year but I'm still not able to get anything.
