How much to spend on a 10 year old

Starfish125 · 13/05/2024 18:00

My daughter turns 10 in a couple of weeks and I don't know if what I have got her seems adequate enough?

She's got £100 spending money for a shopping trip with me
Brand new Nike pro leggings £26 (used my NHS blue light card)
Slam dunk face cream £29

And that's it. Don't get me wrong I know this all equates to a lot of money but it also seems really underwhelming and compared to what her friends get, it isn't a lot 😕

Any ideas for gifts that don't cost too much just so she has more to open? Or is this enough? Or maybe one more expensive present?

She's a really lovely unspoilt child which makes me feel a bit worried this is not enough. Btw just to note there is no party to cater into the funds as she just wants her best friend round for a sleepover.
(Apologies if this is in the wrong thread but wasn't sure which topic)

Could you get her some nice pjs and a pair of slippers, maybe even a dressing gown? Lip balms, nice clips/hair ties? Just to bulk it up a bit. Primark is good for lots of little nick nacs, bath bombs etc can be bought there if she’s into that kind of thing?

MavisTheMonkey · 13/05/2024 18:15

10 is a tricky age as they are old enough to want more expensive gifts but young enough to still want to open stuff!

I hate buying "tat" so usually buy and wrap up things that they need, or that I'm likely to have to buy them in the next few months so they always get new PJs, new shampoo and conditioner, maybe a new water bottle, that kind of thing.

You could then reduce the cash down to £75?

IamSlave · 13/05/2024 18:42

Surely 100 is a good amount dependent on where you shop.. What's slam dunk face cream?.

TooManyNiblings · 13/05/2024 18:47

But she will have a lot more presents when you have taken her shopping??

LottieMary · 13/05/2024 18:49

I’d always add books to any birthday list!

SonicTheHodgeheg · 13/05/2024 18:50

Would she like something like a body mist? If budget is flexible something like a Sol de Janeiro might be appreciated ?

WittiestUsernameEver · 13/05/2024 18:53

That's plenty. Presumably she's getting stuff from family and friends as well? And presumably a cake or something else? And I'm sure you'll take her for a treat of some sort on the shopping day.

No need to "bulk it up" with stuff just for the sake of it... Mindless consumerism in children shouldn't be encouraged imo!

Cantabulous · 13/05/2024 19:11

Why does a 10 year old need face cream???

A teddy? Books? A new duvet cover?

Lifeisgood1 · 13/05/2024 19:12

One of my daughter's favourite gifts is a beauty hamper we do for birthday and Christmas and fill with things like lip balm, bath bombs, hair bobbles, face masks etc. We've done it for a few years and it's her absolute favourite. Even better she made me one for my Christmas!

CleftChin · 13/05/2024 19:13

to me that's plenty.

My kids'll get one big present (could be anything between 50-300 depending on what they need/want - eg. if they need a new ipad it'll at the 300 end, and probably shared between birthday and Christmas, if there's nothing they need then a computer game or something similar for 50). Then 2-3 little bits that they've mentioned at some point - of the 2-15 quid level.

Plus cake and balloons and a dinner out.

Dashel · 13/05/2024 19:19

Personally I would probably spend another £20 on small presents such as favourite sweets or a food treat, a book, pencil case or something for school. Something for her hair or some character socks.

As she isn’t having a party as such I think the birthday equivalent of a Christmas stocking might be nice.

AliceMcK · 13/05/2024 19:21

Satin pjs
clear mascara is a thing for my 10 & 12yo DDs at the moment.
Animal tracking bracelet (turtles, sharks, polar bears)
nice note pad & pen.

NuffSaidSam · 13/05/2024 19:23

It's makes me so sad that a 10 year old wants face cream for her birthday!

Of that's what she wants though they sound like three nice, big presents.

I'd probably add in a few more parcels to open, but do as pp said and included stuff she needs within that. I definitely get a book or two and then some toiletries, maybe some chocolate/sweets.

Roseshavethorns · 13/05/2024 19:25

I think it's plenty however if you feel it's not much how about a "sleepover kit". Face packs, snacks, drinks etc. Basically whatever you would get for a special sleepover anyway but you could put it in a nice basket. That way it is something extra to open but not much more expense.

A new more grown up pair of pyjamas may be good too.

WYorkshireRose · 13/05/2024 19:31

Not the point of your post but, "brand new" leggings as opposed to... used leggings? Confused

Personally I think the list looks a bit miserly, and world probably try to bulk it out a bit with small things that she'll enjoy/use e.g. favourite chocolate/sweets, stationery, books, etc.

Also, why does a 10yo need £30 face cream?!

Starfish125 · 13/05/2024 19:50

Thanks for all the advice! Santin pjs was a good shout she did mention them ages ago and I forgot.

Unfortunately 10 year old kids do actually want face cream, it's crazy I know, I don't get the hype, I used to want a colouring in book, it's sad how times have changed!

In regards to brand new leggings comment, last year I got her a nearly new pair off vinted for £10, so buying brand new leggings at £26 gave me a pang in the chest 🤣

Along with the PJ's I think I'll go Primark and buy a couple of other cheapy bits!

If she's having a sleep over, matching pj's and some pamper bits might be a good shout. I have a friend with a similar aged daughter and they love being matching at sleepovers!

Caspianberg · 14/05/2024 07:42

If you want something toy but teen like, I recommend the Lego Orchid. Is often around £30 and they have a larger box to open, and something to build. Then keep for years in bedroom as plant ( or anywhere else in house)

Ukholidaysaregreat · 14/05/2024 07:49

I usually get mine sweets or chocolates that they don't have to share. They often ask for a box of After Eights! 🤣🤣🤣They really like having them not as a family box that everyone is eating.

somewhereovertherain · 14/05/2024 11:59

Personally we’ve always spent £50 except for 18 & 21 then they got more. We spent a bit more at Christmas but still not loads.

so I’d say she’s got plenty already.

Woodstocks · 15/05/2024 17:51

I also agree that £150 is loads for a ten year old! I have step kids and we spend approx £50 on a birthday.

We got them a activity voucher which was £35 and then topped up with some
bits. A pack of their favourite expensive branded fancy cereal which we don’t normally buy, new socks, some chocolates, and a small build your own toy (like Lego but a cheaper brand).

I agree with previous posters that it is Not necessary to get caught up with that spending mentality as you will just get their expectations up and up and end up with spoiled kids who expect their list to get ticked off every time

Fluffycloudsfloatinginthesky · 15/05/2024 18:10

Primark have got satiny VS style pj's in the adult section. My 12 yo has the pink striped ones and I have bought the black with pink piping for her bday.

At the cheaper and of the scale she loves the so!!! body sprays you can get in Superdrug.

Needmorelego · 15/05/2024 18:12

What's she going to spend the £100 on?
Why not just buy it before hand?

Mine doesn’t! What are the active ingredients? Is it suitable for sensitive young skin?? My 10 year old is mainly into books/crafts etc, she got a sewing machine, a pattern book and fabric for her 10th birthday plus some books and a big ‘cuddle cushion’ for reading in bed.
If you’ve got her what she wants, I wouldn’t buy more to pad it out just for the sake of it.

Spin4Gin · 15/05/2024 18:17

Just make sure it's safe for a 10 year old as some of their products are not suitable for 10 year olds
