My mums mobility scooter broke down (hardly used, but is 18 months old), and she needs it to go on holiday soon.
So she took it back to where we bought it, as old ladies do. They said they would look at it, but didn't mention an inspection charge. They did say it might just be the battery, which would cost £200. A replacement battery for that scooter costs £65 from an independant dealer.
They have had it for a week, and now say they want £310 to fix it, It needs a new cotrol panel.
We paid £299 for it new, so she doesn't want to pay that to repair it. She said she'll have it back as is, but they won't hand it over unless she pays them £60, 2 hours labour, even tho it won't go, and I suspect is actually now in pieces.
When she said she felt £60 was a bit much to not fix it, the guy turned unpleasant on the phone, and said she will not be given her scooter back.
She accepts that they have looked at the scooter, but we both feel that £60 is steep for nothing. Maybe £20-25 would be acceptable.
I've spent this morning ringing round and a guy near to me says IF it needs a new controller he can supply and fit one for about £50, as the actual part will cost £25 or less for that model.
But legally, can the shop hold on to the scooter?
