Home improvements or clear debt??

DH and I have a credit card each, we've stupidly let both balances get up to £3k. 0% period is about to end so we've been saving to pay them off to avoid paying interest on the balance.

However

Our garage needs a proper roof (ours currently leaks and I worry about storing stuff in there). Our front door is on its way out, our kitchen is knackered and our garden needs work as the soil is very clay like and floods in patches in the winter.

I'm worried that when we clear the credit cards, we'll have no savings left. DH wants to clear credit cards but I'm wondering if we should do home improvements first and save to clear credit cards after.

WWYD??

Clear the debt, always.

Clear debt. Your 0% is about to end so what % is it going to be?

For 6K you aren’t going to get anything done.

Credits cards
roof
Front door

then kitchen or garden.

Focus on needs not wants.

Clear the debts! Always and every time.
You will feel so much better when you do.

Clear the debt.

Debt first! You'll just throw away money on interest otherwise. Clear it and then save.

Clear debt.

Save some money

Do kitchen. It's expensive but you probably spend a fair amount of time there.

Front door next.

Ruthlessly get rid of any crap in the garage, then re-roof. Low priority. You don't live in your garage.

Garden. Might be expensive but if the garden is OK in summer when you do actually use it, put up with it for a while. Again, low priority.

Clear the debt first.

Then you can start saving to sort the roof.
Then the front door.

The rest will have to be longer term projects.

Don't get into a cycle of debt as a) it'll be more expensive overall and b) you'll look back and kick yourself

Why not move the debt to another 0% card and then you won’t pay interest. And do the essential works eg garage roof

Mayflower282 · 12/05/2024 08:34

Clear the debt! Then save up for the repairs. You will feel such a weight off your shoulders when you don’t have debt hanging over you.

Clear the debt and get cheaper funding for the projects, or save. Credit cards not on 0% are a very expensive way of borrowing.
