missed payment on dad's credit card aaaaaarggh

Hi,

My dad let me use his credit card to fund a trip abroad. I won a compensation claim for a nasty injury and the money was due to hit my account a month before the holiday the holiday. There was a delay ( I have got it now) so my dad added me to his credit card as second user and I took the card on holiday, used it and then planned to clear the balance upon my return.

it's a card he rarely uses so there was no DD set up for minumum payment. I messed up and paid a few days late, purely by mistake and now he has received a late payment marker on his credit file and his score has dropped to poor :(. I am mortified

he has been so cool about it and actually laughed. He is 69 and isn't really fussed about his score, however I feel so bad. Is there anything that can be done to convince them to remove the late payment marker??

Oh dear. I suppose it’s a risk he took and it doesn’t sound as though he’s too upset.

shoofly · 06/05/2024 23:48

Honestly if he's not bothered I'd stop stressing. Presumably he's not looking to borrow/mortgage etc so it hardly matters

Deathbyfluffy · 06/05/2024 23:49

If the payment was late, the marker is correct and there’s nothing you can do

I feel like a horrible financial abuser

Have you paid it all off now? If not, set up a DD so this doesn't happen again.
There's nothing you can do about the late payment but it would be far worse for the credit history if it happened twice.

1 late payment shouldn't make his credit rating poor?

MariaVT65 · 07/05/2024 01:01

There is nothing you can do about the late payment marker, as it’s correct. The bank can’t even remove it for you as a gesture of goodwill for a mistake as they have to report accurately, which they have done.

Your dad just needs to be careful about applying for any new credit including new credit cards for a little while.

This. He must have had a pretty bad rating if 1 missed payment put him on poor. Luckily he doesn't really mind. Just pay it off.

You are misunderstanding what financial abuse means.

You made a mistake, he doesn’t care and he doesn’t need credit so the practical impact is minimal.

Kindly, do you need to sleep to someone about anxiety? You are blowing this out of proportion.

HollyKnight · 07/05/2024 02:16

If his credit rating is poor, it's because he has been bad with his finances himself.

Financial abuse includes misusing other people's credit cards, running up debt without paying it off on time, leaving them in debt or damaging their credit rating.

The minimum payment would have been tiny so the OP should have been able to pay that on time if nothing else.

But I agree that a single missed payment shouldn't have too much impact, especially if time passes and its clear its a one off.

No it’s not, it’s controlling people’s access to their own money, restricting what they are allowed to spend and keeping them unable to function independently, so they are dependent on you. What you describe is fraud. What OP did is neither.
