Payday since mortgage increase

Hi

I am a single mum of two, working full time in a good job. I went through a divorce a few years ago but took on the family home and all of the bills as I didn’t want the kids to be uprooted. I don’t get a great deal of financial support from my children’s dad, however that’s another long and very boring story but I won’t go into here.

I was one of the people who was quite badly affected by the mortgage rate increases. My mortgage was already quite high but it is increased significantly over the last year. I am very lucky to have a good job. I’ve worked hard for years to get promotions and to earn as much as I can. My take-home pay is £4000 However, after my mortgage, all of my utility bills and other direct debits have come out, I am left with £1600. No, I know that £1600 isn’t an significant amount of money so please don’t accuse me of being out of touch, however, it just seems crazy that more than half of my salary disappears within one day. The money that is left have to cover food, shopping, stuff for the kids, and basically anything that we want to do that is fun.

I think that I am just feeling a bit miserable today, and as though I’m never going to be able to really enjoy my salary. I don’t expect to be going on exotic holidays in the Maldives, also be able to go shopping five times a week, however, it just seems to disappear from my bank so quickly!

Perhaps I’m just miserable, because it’s Monday!

It's probably hitting hard because you're on your own too. Well done for taking it all on to give your kids a better life. Are they still young? Could it be that things might improve as they get older and don't need childcare etc?

Moan away - it's a manic Monday here today too. I'm blaming the cold weather!

When you say you get some money from your ExH, are you getting this via CMS?

If you really feel overextended is it an option to move somewhere slightly cheaper and free up some money?

Sorry that things are tough op. It’s hard when you’re a single income household. What does the £1600 have to cover?
