Housing benefit help

MamaToTheMonsters · 23/04/2024 18:16

Hi! I'm having my mum move into my council house with me and my son on Monday as her landlady wanted her house back.
I receive uc and full housing benefit as I'm a single mum to my little boy.
I'm wondering how much will be deducted from my benefits/ housing benefit as I won't be changing her rent so she can save to put a deposit down on a house. (She's helping out with groceries, electric and gas)
I've heard less will be deducted because I'm under 25 but I'm not sure how true this is..

If anybody could give me an idea of how much my money will be effected that'd be fab
Thanks in advance x

Does your mum receive any benefits?

MamaToTheMonsters · 23/04/2024 18:20

@TigerRag she receives a tiny bit of UC x

I think UC will see her as a non dependant. Your UC will be reduced by £91.47/month on that basis.

MamaToTheMonsters · 23/04/2024 18:36

@Bromptotoo oh okay that's not so bad! I was expecting it to be over £200. I have trouble understanding how they work it out sometimes lol! Is it monthly and not weekly?
Anxiety is definitely taking over lol.

I think it will depend on your mums income. The more she earns the more they will deduct from your housing benefit.

Littlebitpsycho · 23/04/2024 18:45

@Baileyqueen i dont think mums income will be taken into account, as they are not a couple. I think it's just the non-dependant deduction which will affect the posters UC

No.

OP is on Universal Credit so, unless 'Housing Benefit' is in payment for temporary or emergency accom, it's actually the Housing Cost Element in UC that's paid towards rent.

In UC the deduction for a non Dep is fixed at £91.47/month irrespective of the ND's income.

If however the OP gets help with Council Tax that might relate to her Mum's income.

MamaToTheMonsters · 23/04/2024 18:46

@Baileyqueen thank you! Is there a maximum amount they can take off?

Op listed the housing benefit as if it was a separate benefit. Probably best to just check with them op.

MamaToTheMonsters · 23/04/2024 18:50

@Bromptotoo so it won't be any more than £91.47 do you think? It's just that it's making me quite anxious

I have my full rent covered with housing benefit, standard allowance, council tax help and child allowance

I did 'entitled.to' online and they said the same about the £91.47 and council tax help. I'm sure she'll be more than happy to cover this but I feel bad asking when she's done so much for us this past year, I just want to return the favour.

Thanks so much for your help by the way. Sorry to keep asking questions Flowers

@Baileyqueen @Bromptotoo sorry! I didn't know it could be separate as I've only been claiming for just under two years!

Housing benefit is included in my UC claim. Does this change anything?

Thank you both for your help xx

Provided your housing costs are paid in UC then you're subject to UC rules and an Non Dep deduction of £91.47.

Only different if you get 'legacy' Housing Benefit as a claimant over State Pension age or if you're in temporary or emergency housing which, on basis of what you say, you're not.

They’re 2 separate things.
Housing benefit and the housing element of universal credit.

If you receive your rent as part of your Universal credit, then you receive the housing element of universal credit not housing benefit.

Housing benefit is paid if you’re in temporary or supported accommodation.

It will be the £91.47 non-dependent deduction, regardless of your mums income.

MamaToTheMonsters · 23/04/2024 19:03

@thisfilmisboring123 thank you! Yeah it'll be the housing element of UC then. Thank you for your help x

aside from council tax relief

do you claim to be the only adult in the household over 18? If so you will need to inform council tax that you are no longer eligible for the 25% single person discount. This will only apply for the months your dm is living with you and will increase the council tax by 25%

StMarieforme · 23/04/2024 19:56

And please, do ask your Mum for the difference of what they reduce your UC by. She would likely be upset to know you were financially worse off.
