Debit card for 9 year old

Thinking of getting daughter a debit card. She gets £10 pocket money a week then an extra £5 for completing daily tasks( make bed, keep room tidy, keep playroom tidy, put any laundry away and do her homework).

Some things she wants is online purchases- such as Vbucks.
I always buy it in the agreement she pays me back but you know what it’s like it never happens.

Also some shops have gone cash free

So anyone got one for their child?
There’s a couple of kids ones about. Henry? Rooster?

Looking for recommendations- thanks

@TheCompactPussycat most banks like HSBC can be used but a small fee will be charged. I think Starling is a good option to use abroad with no fees.

Blueberryancakes · 18/04/2024 09:16

We know it’s a 12. We are very sensible. She isn’t allowed online without us. She isn’t allowed to play Roblox.
I will allow her to watch Simpson episodes that are a 12 .

Online purchases she has made is a game pass which we were happy about

@TheCompactPussycat Chase Bank is one
of the best debit cards for using abroad, with no fees. Martin Lewis recommends it so I now have one and have used it abroad.

Also online purchases are the way of the world and would rather educate her from a young age.

I’ll look into Chase bank as well thank you

I would on the basis i don’t use cash anymore. I wouldn’t let them buy things online at that age though, maybe supervised.

BeaLola · 18/04/2024 10:25

Started DS on a Starling card- he loved it and so did I at the ease you can top up, spaces function, and he used it abroad very easily.

He also , now he is 16 , has a Nationwide account as well to cover all basis for when abroad last year

cloudjumper · 18/04/2024 10:29

We use Nimbl for DS, it's really good. We get an alert on our phones every time he uses it Grin

Also I have asked for bank account recommendation's not parenting advice.

I use Revolut for my 6yo. She gets pocket money for doing chores (and also bribery, terrible parenting on my part 😂). The card is pretty cute and it gives the option of how she can use it. I've turned online and cash withdrawals off just in case she figures it out.

I opened an account for myself to do the transfers and it actually seems pretty decent so I might switch to using it full time

Thanks everyone - we’ve got a NatWest account already so I’ll check out Rooster as that will be free for us.

My 9 year old isn’t allowed on the internet without supervision so if she wanted to buy something I’d have to do it for her.
Ill also look after her card and o my give it to her if she’s out and about without me or dad there which is very rare

With the Starling account you can manage the card so it can’t be used online, at ATMs or in stores unless you allow it through the app.

ButterflyKu · 19/04/2024 08:20

I also have a Rooster referral code if anyone wants one: 6N37D-J.

EnglishBluebell · 19/04/2024 08:59

Blimey. Why pay Go Henry fees for teenagers when they can get a normal bank account with debit card from age 11?

No help to the OP though sorry. We waited until 11 then went for Nationwide which has full online banking services for kids.

Well I do it so I can see where mine has ended up and if he's eaten etc. Cheaper than paying for a private dectective 😂
