Declaring savings on UC

Hi

I'm going to migrate over tomorrow so am just wondering how I declare my savings/child savings on application?

My personal savings are below £6k, my child then has a few hundred pound in a child's savings account. I do however have a large sum of backpay in a separate child's account in their name due to them being awarded DLA at tribunal. This was received last September and I can provide all proof needed it is backpay from the dwp. As far as I am aware as this was over 5k this will be disregarded completely and not just for the first 12 months?

Any help is appreciated thank you

Declare it but make clear it's the child's money then argue if they say it does fall to be included.

Thank you @Bromptotoo

I've started the application but I'm confused I must admit.

It hasn't asked if I've received my migration notice. Is it meant to?

Also so questions are not relevant to me at all like being in care and armed forces. Presumably I just answer no to these.

I haven't actually completed any of the savings but yet as I was hoping I'd get an answer on here so thank you. Presumably though when I do it gives me an option to explain the savings?

I'm abit nervous as the application seemed to be like a tick box process, well at least the bit I've completed.

Also I always thought that income details was net, but it says before any deductions?

Would the child savings come under other?

Backdated money from tribunals/appeals doesn’t count as capital.

Anono1001 · 07/04/2024 17:57

@TwilightSkies so I don't declare it?

Oh I'm nervous. I've seen on a video the ask for your NI number? I haven't been asked that and all my to does are pretty much complete but I cant seem to go back and check them?

Do you have access to the child’s bank account? As in, can you lift money out of it?

Anono1001 · 07/04/2024 18:30

The dla backpay yes. The other one is a 12 month fixed one and then it gets transferred into their isa

I followed the link on my migration notice. It asked me to make an account which I did. I went to apply and I was taken straight to my to do list, but once completed I can't seem to go over it again to make sure it's all accurate.

I'm usually computer literate, maybe I'm nervous of change but I don't feel I've been able to really explain anything? It seemed almost too straightforward but there was no mention of if I have received my migration notice or what my NI is. The asked for gross earnings, not net? Is there another part once the to do list is complete?

They will know you are migrating. they don't ask for your NI number at all as far as I can remember ( it's been a while since I helped anyone with an application ).

I think its the thought of change, and applying has fell crappy now dealing with the loss of our family pet.

It's caught me abit off guard as the to do list seemed to easy to complete. So much so I want to be able to check everything. Still to do the savings but that's where I am confused most as I don't know how to declare child savings and their dla backpay. There is just over 9k backpay and is in a child's account that is accessible as I was led to believe it had to he spent in 12 months but have since been told there is a law that anything over 5k is disregarded for the term of the uc claim?is this correct. But at the same time I don't intend to save it for my child. It will be need to be used so it has to be accessible

It's not really child savings in their own account. If it is accessible to you I would declare it and put a note on your journal explaining that x amount is DLA backpay and ask for it to be disregarded.

YourSnugHazelTraybake · 07/04/2024 23:42

If the savings are wholly in the child's name then you don't need to declare them. If they're in a joint account then you declare them and put a covering note in the journal explaining. Below £6k savings is disregarded completely, above £6k they attribute an income to it that reduces your award, up to a total cut off at £16k. Arrears of benefits are always disregarded for the period they were for, so if it was 6 months of arrears they would be disregarded for 6 months in their entirety.

imtryingtoleave · 08/04/2024 00:59

so if a child has 3k savings does that go towards the savings limit of the adult if they also have 3k savings making 6k

Anono1001 · 08/04/2024 05:58

Thanks everyone. It would seem there is alot more opportunity for me to explain what things are further into the application. I appreciate all the help.
I cant seem to find the letter confirming the dla backpay. I do have the tribunal decision though where is states the dates awarded from/to and the which components have been awarded. What evidence will they require or will they be able to access these details elsewhere?
