Borrowing money from DSS

Say if I was to need around £500 for a deposit on a private rented house, would the DSS lend me it?

If so How soon would I be able to get it?

Depending on which benefits you are entitled to you may be able to get a budgeting loan or in some circumstances a crisis loan to cover deposit/rent in advance.

There are also bond schemes/rend deposit schemes which provide rent in advice and guarantee a deposit in some areas of the country.

Our local council do a scheme called "rent express" where people on certain benefits can borrow the deposit & first months rent for private rentals. If you call your local housing advice office of the council they should be able to tell you if they do a similar scheme.

definitely approach your council housing office first. not sure where you are, but most London boroughs do rent deposit schemes for private rentals. not sure if you have to be on the housing list to qualify though.

they do rent deposit schemes where i live aswell. IIRC you have to be on the council housing list but that could vary by area. To qualify for a budgetting loan for that purpose you have to be on IS JSA for at least 26 weeks and it can take sseveral weeks for it to come through possibly a month depends if they have a back log.

Go to your council, we had no deposit for a place & the council put the whole deposit & first months rent up for us! The deposit obviously goes back to them at the end.
