Paying NI contributions when not working?

I'm currently on maternity leave and don't think I'll be going back to work for a while. Can you still pay NI contributions to make sure you get full pension rights etc? There was lots about this in the news recently.
Does anyone know what I need to do etc? Is it best just to phone the tax office and ask them? Thanks

You should get Home responsibilities Protection if it is you name on the Child benefit book - this protects your pension (if you think there will be a state pension when you retire)

Thanks
I am probably being a tad optimistic thinking I might get a pension...
