Travel money card for 17 year old

My dd is going to the USA for a college trip. I was going to get her a pre paid card for spending money plus a small amount of cash. The cards for under 18s are limited. Is this the best option or should she just use her Halifax account. Any ideas? Thanks

Would travelers checks still work or are they too old 😁 been quite a while since I travelled abroad

Hyperjar is a good shout as no fees for using abroad

I got one from the post office when my DS went to New York at a similar age. I don't know if they still do it.

When my other DS went, I got one from FairFX which I could easily top up if necessary.

Think they are old but such good memories of the excitement of a travellers check 😁

I just got a pre paid travel card in my name, loaded it up and gave it to my 17 yr old son to use. There’s no name on the card itself.

I also downloaded the app onto my phone so that I could top it up while he was away if needed.

Starling bank account can be used for overseas transactions without fees.

I never even considered this. I already have a postoffice one so will look at this. Thank you!

Another recommendation for Starling. No fees and the best exchange rate. You can also send low cost foreign currency payments from the account.

Another recommendation is Chase, which is similar but pays cashback on spending. Obvious caveat that they'd obviously need to offer accounts to under 18s which I think they do.

Prepaid card plus a UK bank card that can be used to draw cash if there is a problem. There are limited circs where prepaid cards don't work; French autoroute tolls were the one that caught us out.

Nationwide have a teenage account, think it's Flex One, which doesn't charge for overseas transactions and issues a debit card.

Revolut or Wise cards

Or

Cash

Travellers cheques no longer exist

Do Halifax charge? If they do then open a First Direct Debit maybe in joint names. They do not charge for use in USA. There's no need for all these other cards now.
