Once i fianlly have my finances sorted, i want to open a savings account so that i can save for next xmas, holidays etc.

I want one that needs notice to access so that i don't spend it all but not tooo much notice about a month i think.
I don't want the money put at risk at all so no share based ones or anything like that.

Was planning on opening a bog standard post office on because i jusdt wanted to be able to pay in the money over the counter whenever i fancied really.

I have had a look but am getting abit baffled......help.

ATM you probably get better interest from an ordinary on-line instant access account, nutty - ING Direct and Alliance and Leicester among others. You can transfer money in and out of current account with these (ie pay it in to current a/c over the counter and then do an online transfer).

This Halifax account has high interest but no withdrawals allowed for 12 months - is that any good? Have to make monthly payments too, at least £25 a time.

Have a look at Moneysupermarket or Moneynet

Nutty - I do understand what you are trying to do, but TBH I would spend the next 6 months scraping every penny to clear debts and then perhaps thinking of saving. Its daft to be paying high rates of interest on debts and earning low rates on savings. Much better to clear the decks first and then start on the savings.

I would make an exception for an emergency fund though. Perhaps try and save, I don't know, say a couple of hundred and not touch it at all - in case of emergencies. But this money needs to be in short notice account.
