Can someone help me? Worried about credit report finding - anyone know what this means?

Someone I know has been added to my ClearScore credit report in March as a ‘financial association’. Does anyone know why this would be? I’m not financially associated with them in any way.

Would he know your details to try and do some kind of fraud or is it some weird cock up at the credit reference agency

They both start with an ‘S’. We live at different addresses and have different date of births etc, who do I need to contact?

This is exactly what happened with my friend. Both she and her sister in law are ‘A Smith’ so the two files because mixed up. It (well, her SIL’s poor credit) affected her credit rating really badly, she couldn’t even get a mobile phone on contract until she realised what was going on. You just need to contact the credit reference agencies to let them know it’s not you.

Mortgage? Really? 🤯

I wonder whether it's your sister who has "borrowed" your details for a mortgage application? That would possibly make more sense. I don't think they'd key a mortgage DiP unless both halves of the couple had apparently consented. So that would mean a male applicant claiming to be him and a female applicant claiming to be you, IYSWIM.

Dispute it with the credit agency and also complain in writing to the Lloyds division responsible. This could very easily wreck your credit.

For what it's worth my husband and his brother were confused by a credit agency. Similar names (think John Jones and Jack Jones) but not similar DOBs or addresses (apart from being in the same city). It was an utter pain in the arse to get it sorted as the brother had shitty credit that showed up on my husbands report BUT we did get it sorted.

Yes, I did wonder about the sister too. Is that possible op?

I hope you're okay OP. Sorry if we're being too blunt. That must be a significant shock.

Is that something that's possible, wouldn't you have to show ID to apply for a mortgage, it's not something I've done for years but all other financial things need the passport and utility bill docs

They could have asked for the credit check to be done with OPs details to get a mortgage offer “in principle”. The submission of proof of ID comes when they move to accept the mortgage offer.

Even if they have not accepted the offer, they are already damaging OP’s credit by doing credit checks.

Sorry OP, I also think your sister is involved on this.

Zonder · 10/03/2024 09:08

Don't tell your sister until you've contacted the bank. Do that right now.

SheepAndSword · 10/03/2024 09:39

Hope you get that sorted quickly OP - I'd get a terrible shock if that happened to me.

But it can be sorted, nuisance as it is having to deal with it

Thanks for explaining but how would it help to pretend to be someone else in the first stage then have to come clean about being a totally different person later on?

I'm usually a cock up before conspiracy person, is there any possibility @Benji1998 that your sister has become an identity thief?

Startingagainandagain · 10/03/2024 09:54

Contact Clearscore straight away.

Tell them you don't recognise the entry on your credit score.

They probably will ask you to send them proof of ID and will investigate.

It could be a genuine error of mixing your sister's and your details.

Or it might be a case of fraud committed by your sister's partner or/and your sister.

Don't say anything to your sister and this man until the credit score agency has had a chance to investigate.

The credit score company can also liaise with the bank to check what is going on.

Would love an update on this!

LiterallyOnFire · 14/03/2024 08:44

I think OP probably has a family situation to deal with. I wouldn't blame her if she didn't come back TBH.
