Do I need Sum-Up or similar?

I'm hoping to start having a stall at local vintage/craft markets.

Can someone knowledgeable explain Sum-up or similar to me? Today I paid someone by tapping their phone not the white box with my card.
I had a quick Google and I saw you can buy Sum-up machines from Argos etc. But then what?

I was looking online to find a "everything you need to know" post but couldn't find anything.

Please help 😊

We've just acquired a SumUp machine to sell a book we've just had published. DH bought it second-hand off a former market stall holder.

He set it up and I've used it at a couple of events. It's very easy - once it's set up with the app on your phone, link it to the machine via Bluetooth.

You put the sale through on your phone, click card payment and ask the customer to tap the machine. You can text or email them a receipt.

Sumup takes 1.69per cent of each sale and pays out quickly.

Make sure you have connectivity wherever you're selling though as it needs either WiFi or a data signal.

I loathed sum-up. Clunky, couldn’t get it to work, their support was useless. I ended up using square instead and still love it a couple of years in. The app is very easy to use and you get a free website with it if you might want one in time. I’ve never needed to access their support as it’s just very straight forward.

I’ve got the smallest white square unit which doesn’t do printed receipts, no one ever asks for one, but you can get it email the customer a receipt.

I do a lot of fairs and know people who like sum-up but it was crap for me.

Thank you both. That's very helpful.

So am I right in thinking you get a machine (whichever you choose) and then link it via an app on your phone?
That sounds very simple!

Have a look at Lopay, it’s cheaper than Sum Up, Square, etc.

It works exactly the same, you use an app on your phone, link it to your bank account, and you take payments via your phone and a little portable card reader.

DM me for a referral code, I don’t work for them but all users get a referral code which if people use it gives them £1000 of transactions fee-free, and I also get the same.

I use SumUp. 99% of the time it’s been great. The machine was under £40 and they take around 1%. I’ve had mine 2.5 years and it’s still going strong (used 6 days a week).

You just have to watch out for them signing you up for other things, such as bank/credit accounts, they can be a bit sneaky.

We use Zettle (from PayPal). I can take payment by tapping a contactless card on the back of my Google Pixel phone, no pinpad.

Yes, that's about it for SumUp. You have to link it to your bank account for it to pay out too

We have SumUp. Had no problems with using it and it’s easy to link up the app and get paid out etc.

Obviously I’ve not tried other card readers, and it probably depends on your business and how much it will be used
