Changing From DLA to PIP

My son will turn 16 in May this year. I'm not sure when I should be applying for PIP for him. Do I need to wait until his DLA runs out in May before I apply?

Dc got a letter asking him to apply (with a time limit). His dla continued till Pip was decided. This was 2019.

Hermittrismegistus · 08/03/2024 12:42

You need to wait until he is 16 to apply for PIap.

Hermittrismegistus · 08/03/2024 12:43

PIP*!

johnworf · 08/03/2024 13:30

Thanks for the replies. I thought as much. I really hope they don't stop the DLA as soon as he's 16 and before I've applied for PIP.

They shouldn't stop it, if they do then that's a mistake on their part and you can get it reinstated.

Babyroobs · 08/03/2024 13:34

PIP is a different benefit with different criteria. it will depend whether he meets the PIP criteria as to whether it continues. You can start looking at the PIP criteria now so you are prepared and can gather medical evidence to support the claim.

Bromptotoo · 08/03/2024 14:05

They should write and tell him/you that DLA will stop and suggest he claims PIP. As @Babyroobs says PIP has different criteria, much more about what you cannot do.

they wrote to me a few months before to ask me to become my child's appointee. I had to complete and form and got a letter back a month later confirming that I am the appointee (DC wouldn't be able to deal with the pip claim). After they turn 16, you get a letter asking you to apply for pip. You need to ring pip and answer a lot of questions and then they send the pip form out which needs to be completed and returned. whilst they assess, DLA will be paid until they have reached a decision on the Pip claim. hth

My DD turns 16 in May too.

About a month ago I got a letter asking if we wanted to name an appointee for her. I filled that in but haven't heard anything since. DD would spend any payments she got within hours on general crap from TEMU and her favourite take aways so I said I wanted to act for her.

I've heard the application for PIP arrives after they turn 16.

I've also contacted my local Citizens Advice as they can help with the form filling in. I did the DLA myself but PIP seems a bit more complicated so I want to make sure I'm getting the right information for them.

I found the pip form a lot easier. There are just 14 or 15 questions (cooking, handling money, reading, communication etc). DLA was a lot more complicated and convoluted.

@doppelganger2 That's good to know. Thank you.

DD takes an awful lot of my time and energy at the moment so the thought of a stack of paperwork to fill in isn't great. It would be good if it's shorter than the DLA paperwork.

johnworf · 08/03/2024 15:04

Thanks everyone for the great advice.

Looking through some paperwork, it appears I have been sent the letter about being an appointee - back in January! I have now missed the date it should have been sent back by. I've filled it in anyway and posted it. No idea if they will accept it.

It doesn't matter if you've not sent the appointee form back in time. You can register to become an appointee while you're doing the initial PIP application.

I have recently received the letter regarding PIP for my disabled child who turns 16 in July. What do I need to say to request to be appointee?

At the beginning of the call state that you want to become an appointee due to X reason meaning the person can not handle their own affairs.

Thank you. Can I wait until they are invited to apply for PIP to do this?

Hermittrismegistus · 12/03/2024 22:49

You can either reply to the DLA letter that should be sent asking if you'd like to become an appointee or wait until the person reaches 16 and then simply ask to become an appointee when you make the initial call for PIP.

I'm another one with a teen turning 16 in May (popular month - what was going on 9 months before May 2008 😂).
We had the letter about the appointee thing a couple of months ago. My husband posted the form but annoyingly didn't keep a copy. We haven't heard anything back. Does anyone have the details of who we would contact to confirm they received the form?
Thanks.

Hermittrismegistus · 12/03/2024 23:41

Just contact DLA and they'll let you known if you've been registered Needmorelego.

Needmorelego · 13/03/2024 00:03

@Hermittrismegistus thanks. We have all the other DLA letters so would it be the phone number on there to ring them?
(I'm slightly terrified it's only 2 months until she's 16. So not ready for this 😵‍💫)

i just explained why I need to do it. Child has severe learning difficulties and cannot read not reply to the form. far too disabled to understand the process. Can only count/calculate until 10 with fingers so isn't able to handle money at all. i would just explain the reasons why you think your child cannot do it (they may be different) - we had no home visit just a letter confirming I am the appointee now. Sometimes there is a home visit.
