Apply for a job double my current salary

Is this a ridiculous idea?
I do seem to meet most of the criteria which is quite niche. It's 'hybrid' travelling around 250 miles however there is a direct and often connection.

Do it. You won't know until you try

GeordieLass02 · 06/03/2024 18:53

Definitely do it.

OhcantthInkofaname · 06/03/2024 18:54

Go for it.

Igmum · 06/03/2024 18:56

Go for it and good luck - apparently men will cheerfully apply for highly paid jobs, even when they don't meet the criteria, while women will modestly hesitate to put themselves forward. You're doing a great thing by applying

Feelingstrange2 · 06/03/2024 18:57

I was once offered a part time role alongside my current part time role at 80% more.

You can guess what I did! Took it. Did both for a year and once I knew it was great, dropped the first one!

I've seen people in IT do this all the time. 40k jobs. Go into self employment at equivalent of 120k. Then get offered a full time employed role at 100k. Looking back they aren't doing anything much different than the original role expect perhaps a few extras demands like late hours etc

This!! Do it!

Dollyparton3 · 06/03/2024 19:06

True story OP, in the early 2010's I was earning less than £40k in a job that I was overqualified for but had no progression potential.

Applied for a job at £95k and got it. Life changed immeasurably. Still in that industry although have moved once. Best decision I ever made

Shareaway11 · 06/03/2024 19:13

Oh wow thanks everyone, I expected to get flamed!

I'm in a similar position to you were, what an inspiration. My only worry is that the expectation will be massive

It will, but you need to remember that if they offer you the role, they think you are up to it! You are the only one standing in your way here

Stickyricepudding · 06/03/2024 19:25

Not quite the salary levels quoted above but i went from £5k to £11k in two years in a p/t role. Then went from £11k to £40k in a f/t job two years later so my salary increased eightfold in 4 years.

So you absolutely must apply for the job, double your money and good luck.

That's great! Any regrets?

Do it!!

12 months ago I was earning £19k and on tax credits. Today I am relieved that the child benefit rate has moved as about to hit £50k.

Not going to lie the first 6 weeks were hell and at one point I was looking for a new job but things have settled. I went from part time to full time and still not sure how people run a house and work full time as am tired all the time (Mumsnet doesn't help 🤣) and the house looks like a bomb site but we are getting there.

I still have a bit of imposter syndrome sometimes thinking I can't believe how much I get paid. But have been able to save quite a bit as used to living on not a lot so have continued as worried in case job doesn't continue, currently on a fixed term contract.

You absolutely need to apply - go for it!

Zapss · 07/03/2024 09:07

Go for the job. Join the winning side.

Dollyparton3 · 07/03/2024 20:59

Hi OP, sorry crazy day. So the expectation and the leap was huge for me. I was in a difficult position (financially and emotionally abused by a DH who had cheated on me multiple times) so the leap HAD to happen.

However, I was ready for it. I worked my nuts off for 3 years, did a lot of fast learning but ultimately I was ready for it. My motto had always been "feel the fear and do it anyway" and I quite enjoy a bit of pressure.

Look, you don't know until you try and as many others have said, me. Take these leaps of faith all the time. You can not go for it because of the fear or you can do it and succeed. If those are the two outcomes why not give it a go?

Sidebeforeself · 07/03/2024 21:01

Well if you don’t apply you definitely wont get it!

No regrets although I wished I had done it earlier but it was a combinstion of lots of things going on which prevented me from moving upwards earlier.

I am working towards a £45k to £50k promotion in the next two years. Women seem to hold themselves back in a way that men don't.

novocaine4thesoul · 08/03/2024 04:38

Absolutely go for it. Even at the very worst, you will have some experience of what an interview for a role of this nature entails, and it may make you think of other roles that you could go for. Loads of people start a new job that they think they might struggle to do, most rise to the challenge. Good luck xx

PeopleAreWeird · 08/03/2024 04:38

Go for it

Look at Boris and Trump!

The world is messed up.

Anyone can apply for anything

Good Luck - Hope it works out for you

Fallenangelofthenorth · 08/03/2024 05:07

I would absolutely apply for a job on loads more money. My only concern would be the 250 mile journey. How often would it be? And how long would it take door to door?

SasumaFan · 08/03/2024 19:59

What kind of industries/jobs do those of you who've quickly accelerated your salaries work in?

cazinge · 08/03/2024 20:20

Absolutely go for it. Even if they offer it to you, you don't have to take it!

I went from £22k to £37.5k in one jump in 2013 (70% rise), by the time I left that workplace I was on £50k including 2 x mat leaves in the time I was there. The job I moved for was £70k (42% rise). Unfortunately you only usually get decent pay rises by moving.

chocolaterevs · 08/03/2024 20:57

Would anyone mind sharing what sorts of jobs you have been able to take these jumps in? This would never happen in my industry. It's so limiting.

minisoksmakehardwork · 08/03/2024 21:18

I applied for a job that I had nothing but 'lived experince' to qualify me. Like option 4 beyond all the professional qualifications that were preferred. More than double my previous wage.

I bloody got the job and have never looked back. I truly enjoy my days.

Go for it and good luck from me.

BeADinosaur · 08/03/2024 21:27

Do it. Do it.

I did it! I was made redundant during COVID so was literally applying for everything during my notice period. I applied for an area I had zero experience in, but had transferable skills, close to double my gross salary and I got it!

Had 2 promotions in 3 years and I'm another 10k a year in front.

I now have a career instead of a job and enough financial independence I could tell my abusive partner to go fuck himself.

The worst that could happen is they say no. The best that can happen is it could change your life.

All the luck to you!
