Child benefit charge

DH is on about £53000 a year I think, I asked him if we need to pay back some child benefit and he said no that’s his gross salary. Is that correct? Google has not been my friend here. His take home is about £3000 a month.
My paranoia is high as I have had recent HMRC hell and DH is lovely but more laid back than I!

Gross salary is relevant not net salary, but he can take off pension contributions.

But yes if earning £53k and employee pension contributions are less than £3k then he will need to do a self assessment and repay some child benefit.

If his salary of £53,000 less his pension contributions take him under £50k then you don’t have to repay if.

SpringOfContentment · 03/03/2024 09:31

As above, what pension contributions does he make? And does he have a company car, health insurance or other taxable benifits?

When you get a P60 in a month or so look at the taxable salary box. If that is over 50k, you need to do a tax return and pay back some of the child benifit. If it's under 50k, you keep all the child benifit.

Tax scouts are good if he needs to do a tax return, but don't fall into the trap of doing it for him! Send him the link and crack on

He needs to pay some back if he is the higher earner
