How much was your gas and electricity bill (actual usage)

I know it's all relative on house size etc. We pay for actual usage not estimates and it's come out £750 for the last 3 months. Last year for the same period we paid £400. In a 3 bedroom terrance house.

Also has anyone had experience of their usage suddenly increasing? Apparently from the beginning of January we have managed to use triple the amount of electricity than from previous years/months (even from December when we had Xmas lights on!). I find this really concerning as I have massively cut back e.g don't use the tumble drier at all now. Could this be a fault?

Planning to ring British Gas this morning.

I was having this discussion with dh last night. We've been consistently using about £45 to £50 a week electricity (we have no gas but do use oil). The electric is on a smart meter so it's accurate. But over the past few weeks it's been around £55 a week which is I'm ridiculously high for 2 people in a small house. I used to pay £60 a month before it all started going up!

WantOutOfRatRace · 27/02/2024 07:59

I pay direct debit £100 per month. In summer I built up credit of about £20 a month. November and December were pretty much spot on £100. January and February have been £120ish. I was a bit surprised - nothing stands out as different from December

Mairzydotes · 27/02/2024 08:01

How much does your bill say you've used in kwh?
Is that consistent with last year?

CatLevelCare · 27/02/2024 08:07

Standing charges have gone up a lot, too. Not switching anything on costs money. Look at your usage, rather than cost to see how it compares.

namechange49573 · 27/02/2024 08:15

Last year for the same quarter we used roughly 800 kw in electricity. This year for the same 3 months it's saying 1700kw. This makes no sense as I've massively cut back.

Is there a way we can check this is accurate?

To add this hike in usage started in January for some reason December looks normal.

Have you bought an electric car?

I live in a three bed terrace (end of) and have a smart meter. It costs about £10-11 per day to have the heating on all day, about £6-7 if we have it for a couple of hours in morning and a couple more in the evening, and about £3/day in the summer when the heating isn't on at all, just electricity and a bit of gas for cooking and hot water. These figures are for both gas / electric combined.

So in a cold snap I could easily spend £70 / week (£300/month), but I do try to keep everything off as much as I can, to keep the costs down. Our direct debit is currently £175 / month which seems fine.

Changed18 · 27/02/2024 08:27

Is it maybe because it was fairly cold in January and parts of February?

Tulipblank · 27/02/2024 09:24

Last 4 weeks we've used £380 in gas and electric. Based on actual usage from readings. Feels an incredible amount, but we have a decent sized 4/5 bed semi, have an electric car and work from home most of the time.

I'm hoping it significantly decreases when spring comes!

Tdcp · 27/02/2024 09:32

We use about £230 a month for gas and electric, usually around £100 for electric. We're 3 people in a 2 bed semi that is permanently cold. We have one console and one tv so it's not like we have things running all of the time, though we do use the tumble dryer a lot.

At least you know why it has cost you more, it appears you have used more. If i were you I would take weekly readings for a while to help you track down where the usage is coming from. Have a think about if you have any new appliances, or using them more regularly, gaming, tumbler dryer, electric shower being used more often/for longer, etc. I recently got a dehumidifier and that has slightly increased my electric use. I believe there is a test you can do, turn off your appliances and see if the meter changes, at least you'll know if its a meter fault or not.

Cotswoldbee · 27/02/2024 12:46

We are in a new 4-bed and although we have a SM (love them 😘) we also submit readings every month (probs with the SM at the beginning which were quickly resolved but the habit stuck).

This Jan was the most expensive of the past two years at £140 for G&E, this was due to the incessant rain and cold which meant heating, tumble & dehumidifier were being well used. This Feb for instance, being more mild it will be nearer to £100-£120.

When we moved in we set up the DD based on Eon's presumed consumption, this quickly built up credit to about £1k so as time showed actual usage was a lot lower we reduced the DD and started to make (tiny) inroads into the credit.

daffodilandtulip · 27/02/2024 13:02

Actual usage, £100/mth in the winter, 3 bed/3 storey old town house.

Shithole101 · 27/02/2024 13:23

I'm in a 4/5 bed town house 5 people.

My electric for 21 days was 73.04
Standing charge 8.78

Gas for 22 days 38.71
Standing charge 8.77

PoppingCandles · 27/02/2024 13:28

Plugged in a old freezer?

Or some appliance gone faulty.
Gaming can also use quite a bit. New console for xmas?

CatLevelCare · 27/02/2024 15:02

That's a large increase in usage. Has nothing changed?
Electric heater? Car charger?

Smart meter faulty? It does happen, and puts me off ever getting one.

AlmostAJillSandwich · 27/02/2024 21:40

electric for 3 months was £55, due to getting the £150 warm home discount. Gas was £30.
