Do you get tax credits or housing benefits? will I be able to?

just trying to work out if I could still afford to live in if moved in with my partner. I'm currently living in a one bed flat with my daughter, there is no space for me let alone for him to move in so when we do move in we will be looking at renting a two bed flat which will cost around £200+ a week.

I currently recieve housing benefits and working tax credit as I work part time. However when we move in together which will probably be next year I (hopefully) will be a seconded student on a band 3 salary I think! so around £14-15 grand a year, my partner will have finished uni and plans to work full time in sports shop while loking for graduate job so earning paltry 12 grand a year I reckon!

I will be paying childcare about 160 a week. also coucil tax bills etc...

if anyone else earns similar or more and gets help from government please let me know. Thanks

put it through here

YOu should deffo get Tax credits.

You have to earn a fortune not to get anything at all. In fact I alone earn about what your combined total is and we still get a 3 figure some (I think) every 4 weeks.

You can go to the inland revenue website and use their calculator to check if you will get tax credits.

Not sure about the other benefits you mention though.

Thanks for the suggestions, I looked at the tax credit website it said we should get about 100 a week, which wouldn't leave us with any disposable income!

the entitled to website said the same for tax credits but said we would recieve £140 a week housing benefit which I very much doubt!

Not sure but i know the housing benefit bit on the tax credits site is wrong, it is just going by the amount they would give you as an income & not taking wages into account.

However you may be entitled to a bit it would be around £40 a week housing benefit & no council tax benefit.

ScoobyDoo · 23/03/2008 16:39

Actually combining both your wages i don't think you would get any....

Have you looked on your local council website if they have a benefit calculator?

beautifuldays · 23/03/2008 16:41

i doubt you'd get much on a combined income of 27 grand tbh.

my dh earns about that and i am a SAHM so earn nothing, and our rent is £630 a month. i very much doubt you'd get housing benefit. all we get is the £600 a year child tax credit which everyone earning under 60k gets.

i looked into whether i would get help with childcare if i went back to work and they said no, although it might be different as you're a student.

you would get the reduced rate of council tax if you're a student tho.

god it's crap isn't it, looks like I'd be better off living on my own. Im in council flat now am on waiting list for a 2 bedroom but that will take years to get one. so privately renting is only way to get a two-bed at the moment, will also have to movem to a diffrent area.

might be worth me looking into keyworker housing if I can't get housing benefit.

I think if you both work over 30 hours a week, you might get more help tbh. Me and ds earn about 27000 per year each, and have 3 dc's. We get about £235.00 per month, We also pay £400 c/care per month

HappyMummyOfOne · 23/03/2008 19:20

On a £26k joint salary with one child you would qualify for tax credits of £42 a month and family allowance at the standard rate.

HB and council tax benefit you would be over the threashold for.
