We have a few thousand pounds to invest and would like some advice on the best thing to do for long term gain. We hope to add more to the pot over time. Any advice?

What's the money for- emergency fund, housing or retirement savings? If you don't envisage ever needing access to it then it can be very tax efficient to put it into your pension (if you don't already max out your contributions) - but obviously you then usually can't access that money until retirement which is very long term in some instances!

If you may want to be able to withdraw the money I'd go for a stocks and shares ISA with a managed fund option (not choose your own) - there are lots of options on the market with good performance records, I used to use nutmeg but swapped for a more ethical option, I now use the BigExchange and have been happy with the performance - the platform will ask you questions to assess your risk appetite, the higher the risk you take the more you may make back but of course particularly in the short term you may lose money too. If you want a very safe option a fixed rate ISA is also a good choice or actually just a normal fixed rate saver in today's market have quite good rates (5%+).

What are you classing as long term 5,10,20 years?

You do not have to out the exact amount but few thousand could be anything.
Is it say six months living expenses level or at the ISA limit?
