Tenancy & deposit after Bereavement

Looking for a bit of advice on my mums tenancy deposit please. Landlords welcome too.

My mum recently passed away, she was renting a lovely flat for the last 10 years. She looked after it very very well. She had it freshly painted professionally all throughout last year and windows and carpets cleaned professionally once a year too. We gave notice on the flat right away which gave us a month to clear it out etc. The landlord was very kind and didn't want any rent for this last month. The letting agents were also very helpful in any correspondence I had with them. I had handed the keys back early as I don't live near the area. They booked the check out inspection for last week. I wasn't asked to be present at the inspection. The deposit was returned to me as the estate executor, this week. Except it is over £200 short. I've had no written correspondence about the check out inspection, the deposit or why they would need/want to take money out of this. I've sent an email off to the letting agent this morning to clarify. Is this normal? I was expecting maybe some dispute about the deposit as I left a bookcase and some items in a store cupboard that were in the property already, but I expected to be contacted about this first. Any advice would be greatfuly received.

I meant to add. Can they just take money from the deposit without consent/written notice because I was not the tenant, only the executor of estate?

Contact Shelter and ask them this question, they will or should give you decent advice. Then hopefully you can go back to the agent with knowledge of what should be happening in the case of the missing money

sorry for your loss
