New UC claim and adult child

Ex husband has moved out. Friends told me I should claim UC. The calculator says I would get an award.

I have 3 children that would be on my claim, plus a 19 year old DD who works. She also has savings over £10K. Would she be totally separate from my claim? Would her savings affect my claim?

Her savings wouldn't affect your claim, but she would be expected to pay towards the housing costs if you rent.

Good luck.

There is no non dependent deduction on your rent element for an adult child living with you until she turns 21.

Ah, I didn't realise that. Thanks. It's been a few years since I worked there so my knowledge is a bit faded and out of date!

Your daughter will be treated as a separate adult and not part of your claim but once 21/22 she will have to pay towards any housing costs. When I lived with my mom dwp expected me to pay 90% of the rent based on my earnings. If there were siblings it would have been 45% each. The thresholds are really random too.

Op this is for housing benefit and not relevant to Uc. All that would happen when you child turns 21 is that you would have a non dependent deduction on the amount of rent element that UC pays you ( assuming you need to claim help with rent). It is around £75 per month that is deducted from the rent element they pay. It is up to you whether you ask your daughter to cover this loss or not.
