Carer and claiming pip.

Hi everyone, I am a single mother and I have an adult son who has learning disability, I am his full time carer and in receive carers allowance for him. I am also suffering for depression and anxiety, I struggle on a daily basis with my mental health, I recently made a claim for pip and I had my assessment on Monday, I have severe anxiety thinking about it but do you think pip will refused me because I am a carer? Will they check if I receive carers allowance? Any advice will be appreciated thank you.

Don't worry, you won't get refused due to being a carer. Many people claim both carers allowance and PIP for themselves, it's fine.

As long as you don't contradict the reasons you are claiming with the care you need to provide you can claim both.

TheShellBeach · 10/02/2024 00:20

I've been in receipt of both PIP and Carers Allowance.

I receive PIP at the enhanced rate and Carer's Allowance for my adult son (have been getting it for him since he was 10).

I’ve been on carers allowance for around 10 years as my ds is autistic, he’s 21 in a few weeks and has claimed PIP since he was 16, before that DLA.

I’ve got fibromyalgia, anxiety, OCD and ADHD and have finally decided to apply for PIP last year. I didn’t even send the form in as I couldn’t face it ( have requested form several times in the past and didn’t fill it in so received a letter saying not entitled etc etc ) but this time I received a telephone assessment appointment and was awarded enhanced rate for both. I was totally honest about being a carer for my ds and my assessor was fantastic. Try not to worry. A little tip is to make some notes to refer to as it’s all too easy to forget what you want to say when under pressure. Also, the questions asked by the assessor are widely available online so it’s good to be familiar with them to make it easier on the day.

good luck op 😊

Sorry I didn’t read the op properly where you said you’ve already had your assessment.

my assessment was on 10th July. The backpay was
in my bank on 28th July. Fingers crossed for you!

Thank You everyone for the reassurance, this is the first time I’ve applied and I’m finding the whole process very stressful. How long did everyone have to wait before hearing back from pip ?

I have seen people questioned on what caring they do at a tribunal but not at an assessment. Did they ask you about it at assessment? It shouldn't affect anything unless it contradicts the reasons you are claiming PIP.

Yes, if your daughter receives DLA then you can claim both carers allowance and PIP.

You can claim it but if you are on income related ESA then I'm pretty sure it is deducted from your ESA and then a carers premium added on so you do end up better off. You do need to be careful that the caring you do does not contradict the reasons you claim PIP, not that anyone checks but people have been questioned on it at PIP assessments and tribunals. I have personally known people questioned at a PIP tribunal on the kind of care they are giving for example to an elderly parent.

Hermittrismegistus · 02/06/2024 21:40

It shouldn't negatively affect your money.

ESA and carers allowance are overlapping benefits, so yes it will affect ESA. Perhaps speak to Citizens advice or similar for clarification. With income related ESA you will get a carers premium added on so would end up better off overall.
