Will this job affect her uc?

Hi just looking for some help.

My daughter (22) is my carer and claims uc and she gets the carers element.

She recently had a job interview and they have called her today and said she didn't get the job she applied for but they have another job for her that is 6 hrs a week. Not sure what the pay is but she's guessing minimum wage and the hours are 10-4.

Would this affect her uc? Thanks

Either way it will be good for her confidence if she does it.

I've just been trying to work out the same thing. I'm on UC and cater for me disabled son. I hope he's about to get a school place so looking at working and it's impossible to work out the rules! For me earning £100 a week would only leave me £3 odd better off I think. Posting so I can read the advice you get

On UC you are always better off working. You get a work allowance, then after that they deduct an amount per £ you earn. It doesn't come off £ for £.

I don’t think working 6 hours per week on minimum wage will exceed the work allowance for uc. So it shouldn’t impact uc. Probably best to check with them directly though.

todayshappening · 07/02/2024 17:05

@Sunshine322 I think the work allowance only applies if you have kids. It's all so confusing I wish they did a calculator that you could put in what you already get 😞

They will deduct 55p for every £1 she earns. So she will benefit from 45p of each pound.

so if she earns £269 a month then £163 will be deducted so her income will increase by £203 per month. Not an amount to be sniffed at

Barely anything will be deducted but you’ll also have your wages so will be better off. Council tax may go up a little. https://www.gov.uk/guidance/universal-credit-and-earnings

Universal Credit and earnings

The amount you earn, and how often you're paid your wages, can affect your Universal Credit.

Yes she will lose 55p of Uc for each pound she earns ( assuming she has no kids on her claim ). If she claims carers allowance then she can continue to claim that and will continue to get the carers element on her claim.

She won't get a work allowance unless she has kids or LCW/ LCWRA on her claim.

Namechangepop...... they take 55 pence off you for every pound you are over the allowance. You don't always end up better off!!!!

You should do as you keep all your wages.

Of course you do, minimum 45p per pound earned better off.

shellyleppard · 07/02/2024 19:18

Not when you kose most of any money earned.....

Not when you kose most of any money earned.....

But you’re not. If you earn £100 you’ll lose £55 of your uc but you keep the £100 so you’re £45 quid up.

shellyleppard · 07/02/2024 19:18

What are you not understanding? Yes your UC is reduced by 55p for every £1 you earn, but as you keep the full £1 of your wages you are then 45p per £1 earned better off.

shellyleppard · 07/02/2024 20:07

Dragonfly 98......i understand perfectly thank you very much!!!! You still lose money for working!!!! My partner earned too much the previous month so when he lost his job we ended up with no universal credit. The previous months money had already been spent on bills. So no it doesn't always benefit people to be working!!!

EachandEveryone · 07/02/2024 20:23

What are you on about? UC hasn’t got a magic ball it’s in retrospect they don’t just pay up when you lose a job there and then. It takes a month.

the Op’s daughter gets £300 a month for not working and I’m guessing the job which is six hours a week is about £350 her UC may or may not be reduced but for the love of god surely a 22 year old should be getting some kind of work experience and not wondering if her UC will stop? She will still get the carers allowance

I give up, you/your partner missed out on the UC but gained his wages instead. The fact the money had already been spent is irrelevant.
