Anyone been stafted by UC moving over from tax credits

Just had my first statement for UC which included transitional protection. I thought we would not lose out. I was having £128 weekly with tax credits now I'm having £471 a month now (Minius £16 for repayment). I'm tamping.

Have they definitely included the TP? I know a couple of people had to chase them up to have it sorted properly with the protection in place

TeaKitten · 04/02/2024 10:00

What’s tamping? If you owe a debt we’re you being over paid on tax credits?

WithACatLikeTread · 04/02/2024 10:22

You are only a small amount worse off?

Is it because you have savings ? I think a lot of people don't realize that on UC there will still be deductions for savings between 6k and 16k.

caringcarer · 04/02/2024 11:16

Yes, I think babyroobs is correct. You can have more savings on tax credits but not UC's.

Setting aside the tax credit repayment, it looks as if you’re about £4 per week worse off which does add up over the year. That’s not supposed to happen during 12m transitional protection. I’d put a note in the journal and ask them to review. It might right itself next time.

It doesn't state they've took the over payment from there.

When/where is the debt from then? It’s a small amount so I think it’s quite possible that you were being paid a little too much on TC. UC goes off your earnings in real time so can vary more

Ok must be something wrong with the claim then as you shouldn't be worse off.

I owe £70 tax credits due to the minimum wage going up

Did you take an advance when you switched to uc? They take this off you monthly starting with first statement.

imtryingtoleave · 05/02/2024 08:46

is the amount supposed to be the exact same as before

It is supposed to bevbut I'm having less. When I've questioned it they reckon its right. I knew we'd get stitched up

we are in the process of doing this.

  1. as part of the transfer period they will not include your savings for the first 12 months. After 12 months they will then inlcude your savings
  2. Even though it says you will receive TP, you still have to fulfil the criteria for UC. It looks like my dh won't, so then we won't get any UC as we don't fulfil the criteria, not even the TP.
On the one hand, fair enough, on the other hand, I am pissed off, as they kept saying we would have TP for 12 months, so we had planned on that, and now won't get it. (I should add that it is not to do with us having too much money) dd is 16, so it is only the next couple of years and then she would have aged out anyway. But it would have made a difference.

But you were receiving too much on tax credits and are now paying back the overpayment because you didn’t update the earnings when minimum wage went up last April from what you’ve said. So it’s probably right. Do you get paid 4 weekly or monthly? That can affect the way your payments come through too as it’s calculated in real time.

Soccermumamir · 05/02/2024 20:15

Some people get less, some more and some don't get any. My friend is now worse off, but only around £20 a month. Which I know adds up over the year. It's weird how they work it out.

DaftyLass · 05/02/2024 20:18

If you had been overpaid in the past, they may be servicing that debt now
