First UC payment after migration and it’s incorrect. How will this be corrected?

I’m due my first UC payment next week and I received my statement this morning. My assessment period runs from 3rd of January to the 2nd of February. DH had a wage paid on the 26th of January.

However, deductions relating to DH wage (equating to around £500 after tapering) is not showing on the statement. I don’t think it has been deducted.

There’s a note on DH journal asking him to confirm previous wages, which he will do today. Does this now mean we already have an overpayment? And will it be deducted in full next month (so two lots of wage reduction equating to £1000?)

TIA

Is your husband paid through an employer and on PAYE?

Yes he’s paid PAYE. I understand it will be deducted , but will it be at a rate of 100% next month?

Is there any way to stop the payment at this point and get it corrected?

Do you have a Work Allowance?

AllAbroad · 03/02/2024 09:54

@tocontinue1 yes I think that might be the best thing to do.

@Bromptotoo I assume he does. Are there exemptions? He gets the carer element (but not CA) and we have 2 disabled children on our claim.

We get help with housing costs so I presume the work allowance is £379.

Was trying to get an idea of how the payment would be made up.

The award starts with calculation Max UC; the amount of money the law says you need to live on. For a couple this would be a Standard Allowance, 2*Child Elements and possibly extra because of their disability, plus the Carer Element. If you pay rent there will also be a Housing Costs Element.

If he/both of you have earnings those are added together and then a Work Allowance, money you keep before UC is affected, is deducted. The rest is tapered as a deduction against MAx UC to give the amount payable.

Normally UC pick up earnings via a link with HMRC - they see what the employer reports when they run payroll.

I'd suggest you get your ducks in a row with his payslip(s) since your claim started and call them on Monday.

@Bromptotoo DH has logged in to the account and left a message on the journal. It seems they now require a full years worth of income . What a ball ache this has turned out to be.
DH reported he was working and what his salary was when he made the claim so I’m not sure why they have not deducted the correct amount .

Quick response on my journal confirms that DH employer has not reported his earnings and that’s where the error has come from. DH has had to manually report and the deductions will be made but payment may be late. After already waiting 5 weeks.

@tocontinue1 It is not DH error? He’s a PAYE employee so reporting of earnings lies with his employer.

@tocontinue1 yes, that message was only added today after DH queried why his earnings were not added.

As it happens, it’s all been rather efficient and has now been sorted with our statement updated with the correct deductions. Thanks for the help .

@tocontinue1 we did that at the very start of the claim. We answered ALL questions and our journals were both empty . I assure you , it’s not DH error.

he needs to speak to his employer to make sure earnings have been correctly reported to HMRC. I think you can also check on government gateway account ? If employer has reported earnings late then it's going to fall in next months assessment period and you could end up with two lots of wages wiping out any UC.

At some point they normally ask for earnings for the last nine months to establish whether you are exempt from the benefits cap. This is just routine.

Sorry just seen your update !

AllAbroad · 03/02/2024 13:51

@Babyroobs Thanks. Would DH still need to check with his employer even though it’s now sorted with UC?

I’m concerned about what you’ve said re the two payment cycles in one assessment timeframe. DH got a wage slip so I’m not sure why the earnings were not reported.

I would just keep an eye on next months statement to make sure employers don't report it late and then it gets taken into account again. Glad they have sorted it for now. Very odd how they haven't reported it on time as there were at least a couple of working days after the payday but before the end of your assessment period.
