PREMIUM BONDS FEB 2024

Blondeshavemorefun · 01/02/2024 19:27

New thread and I've been asked to give some basic info. Feel free to add stuff if I’ve missed anything out

Each bond is £1. You have to buy in minimum of £25 each time so means 25 chances to win.

Bonds have to be in for a clear month before going into the draw

If you want to cash bonds in then usually takes 3 days to go into your account

Winnings can be reinvested if holdings are under £50k

Or sent to named bank account if over /want winnings in bank account

More info here

https://www.moneyhelper.org.uk/en/savings/types-of-savings/premium-bonds

The best time to buy premium bonds is on the last day of the month, as this means they are only held by NSI for one month and one day, without being entered into the prize draw.

PB to me is the fun and thrill each month of what if I win big and a millionaire - to a day or two later being grateful if win £25😂

I have nowhere near the maximum and probably never will unless I win £50k + on pb

But only takes one £1 to win that million !!!

I love seeing the low holdings win high amounts

Maximum is £50k per person so some do have all for family- mum dad and 2 kids so £200k etx

Those on the thread are varying from few hundred /thousand - to 20/30k to full holdings of £50k x 2/3/4

Everyone is welcome to join in whether small or full holdings

One would expect if had full holdings of £50k to win something every month and think over the year to earn the same as if in a high interest account to win around £1860 in prizes

From google (august 2023) - The consistent winners are the 1.16 million people who have the maximum £50,000.

They hold almost half of all premium bonds and, at current odds of 21,000:1, can expect a monthly stream of tax-free prizes: two a month and three almost every other month, 28 or 29 a year totaling £1,860

From google (Jan 2024) Tho equally With Premium Bonds, for every person who wins £1 million, a lot of people have to win nothing. So the median average will always be lower than the mean average.

This means that, with average luck, most people will win less than the prize rate each year, regardless of how many bonds they hold

But many on here do have £50k and then consider moving it to an account that pays 5/6% if their bonds aren't doing very well as would then def get extra money

But remember savings /interest get taxed

PB and their winnings don't

So they do dither whether to pull out from pb and put in high interest account if not winning anything

If you have PB but not sure if you have ever won esp if moved about a lot

you can write to NS&I. Include these details in the letter:

	Current name

	Current address

	Premium Bond holder number

All previous addresses where you might have registered bonds

	Your signature

You can send your letter to:

NS&I,
Sunderland
SR43 2SB.

There are 3 apps afaik

Cream - prize checker and if won previous month will show a pic - which we all get excited over 😂😂😂

White - main one with info 😄😄😄

Blue - often doesn't work for me but those who reinvest their winnings say it shows if won the day before app shows 🙀🙀🙀

Should be noted that if you are lucky enough to have full holdings you won’t see anything in the blue app even if you have won as that only shows reinvested prizes.

Now this has been debated on MANY times but seems to be correct

When do we find out

Last day of working month - Millionaire knock /call

First day of working month - list showing all winners million to £1k winners - which I always put up for those who can't find it

Second working day of month - cream app showing all winnings

Hopefully I've covered everything

Good luck one and all 😄

2x £50

Better than last months zero!

MrJollyLivesNextDoor · 02/03/2024 09:07

That's on £12k holding

End of next tax year I'll have to withdraw a chunk to put in my pension to reduce my tax bill but it's still possible to have a big win on smaller holdings 🤞

hellswelshy · 02/03/2024 09:08

£100 here on approximately £14k holding. I'm very pleased, since September I've won something every month bar November! And the last 3 draws its been £100.

RoseBliss · 02/03/2024 09:15

DH pays higher rate tax so tax free winnings are worthwhile. Also got one and soon to be 2 DC at Uni. PB winnings don’t have to be declared to student finance but interest on savings does!

CaveMum · 02/03/2024 09:24

Because DH is a high rate taxpayer and we’ve got a lot of cash savings at the moment, due to an inheritance, holding PBs makes sense for us. We’re currently maxed out on ISAs and have money tied up in the NS&I bond that was available last year too, so we’re earning good interest there.

I think we worked out that as long as we get the equivalent of about 3% return across a year on the PBs it will be equivalent to current “best” interest rates, less the tax we’d have to pay.

We’ll be cashing almost everything in next year when our mortgage fixed rate comes to an end to clear that.

Maarlee · 02/03/2024 09:25

For those with FH’s or large amounts and as interest rates have risen, it is increasingly more difficult to justify PBs.

My easy access savings account (£100,000 but now some removed as due to £85,000 protection limits) is returning between £300 and £400 per month, every month. This return is a bigger gamble than previous years, except for tax implications.

WeWillLookBack · 02/03/2024 09:26

£9k Holding - and have won £250 this month YAH (2x£100 & 1x£50). £350 this year, so already at about the level of a decent savings account, so very happy!

MrJollyLivesNextDoor · 02/03/2024 09:28

I have to self assess and as a higher rate taxpayer I don't want to pay back the child benefit tax charge, so will put chunks in my pension each year to get the 20% relief

ISA and premium bonds don't come anywhere near that. The only think is locking the money away in pension although I'm in my 50s so can withdraw 25% in a few years - and might need to to pay a chunk of money off mortgage when fixed rate ends.

Gives me a headache moving money around 😬 at least I have that option though so I'm grateful for that!

Blondeshavemorefun · 02/03/2024 09:30

Well done @clary You are this months winner so far

I don't know why but the blue app doesn't show me pending /anything won

Doesn't seem to show for all

As now I do reinvest

JayAlfredPrufrock · 02/03/2024 09:31

I used to have a Fidelity investment but withdrew it all to put in the NS&I bonds last year as my investment had not returned to pre COVID and Ukraine war levels. Not sure what I’ll do with it in September when the bonds finish.

Which easy access account is that @Maarlee ?

ApolloandDaphne · 02/03/2024 09:33

DH and I both got £100.

Blondeshavemorefun · 02/03/2024 09:34

My most I have won

3 x £25
1 x 50
1 x 100

£225. I am reinvesting

I seem to have the most luck ever as only have very small holdings

When I had a lot more before ivf/extension 10yrs ago / I barely won

Could you imagine if I had £50k

I could be winning £100/500 a month or £1000 like @clary or @RockaLock

£1275 on £45k. This is after low or no wins on the past 6 months, so great to have a good month!

Actually @user1471447221 you are rhis months winner and knocked @clary off the top spot

But congrats to all

AuntieMarys · 02/03/2024 09:36

Dh has win £1000...that's £2500 he's won in 8 months....he has £35k

You sound similar to me

I have less then you - but def on a winning streak at the moment

Small holdings can win

Just as those who have £50k aren't and thinking of moving them

WimbyAce · 02/03/2024 09:38

Well I'm nothing if not consistent, 3rd month of £100. I have over half holdings so not being greedy but would hope for a slightly bigger prize now and again 😕

Which easy access account is that @Maarlee ?

I use an online Marcus account (Goldman Sachs), linked to my usual high street bank current account. It was easy to set up as the linked account doesn't require the ID to be sent in.
Marcus even e-mail to say that the interest rate has risen and to ‘click’ to apply the new rate. Very easy!

I also use their bonds.

Kickstartplease · 02/03/2024 09:39

£25 on £5700 I invest £100 (was £50 initially) per month - it's interesting only won once £25 (2020) previous to July last year & since then I have won 5 times. I reinvest
Partner £125 on FH

Congratulations to the bigger winners

We won £575 in total last year - and have it set to reinvest. So it is definitely working for us. I like the excitement each month of checking if you have won.

JayAlfredPrufrock · 02/03/2024 09:44

Thanks @Maarlee

TheSweetestHalleluja · 02/03/2024 09:57

£25 this month, also had £25 in January. Really pleased!

EvangelicalAboutButteredToast · 02/03/2024 09:59

£150 on 40k. DP got sod all on full holdings. He was most irritated.

WobblyLondoner · 02/03/2024 10:04

Nothing for me, DP or DS - I'm on full holdings; they have a lot less. First time in ages (a year??) that none of us have won. A bit gutting!

Newestname002 · 02/03/2024 10:11

A lucky month. I've won three smaller prizes totalling £250, which will go into the April draw together with my other bonds. I'm tidying up a couple of bank accounts so those funds will go into premium bonds too. Keeping fingers crossed for one of the big prizes though - it's time! 🌹

burnoutbabe · 02/03/2024 10:27

£225 on full holdings. Sane as last month (Jan was £300 which I think is highest ever)
