Statutory maternity pay - is this right?!

Fellow Mums out there!! I’m a civil servant on maternity leave and my package is as follows:

  • 6 months full pay
  • 3 months statutory
  • 3 months unpaid

This is my first month of statutory maternity pay but I didn’t start my maternity leave until the second week of July. I was expecting a full weeks pay, followed by 3 weeks statutory in this months pay packet,

Can anyone share how much they have come out with this month based on statutory only? My amount is remarkably less than expected. I’ve contacted management who have directed me to HR.

I know statutory is around £172 but I just want to know the total amount others have come out with in Jan pay.

thank you

Im a civil servant and have the same package, but ours is calculated in weeks. When i was on mat leave with DD1, given there isnt exactly 4 weeks in a month, i hadn't got my calculations quite right so my enhanced portion had actually ended earlier than i had expected. Could that be what had happened here? But i definitely agree with contacting HR - they can make mistakes. My annual leave allowance and bonus had all been calculated incorrectly when i got back to work and was a right faff to sort out. 😔

hello, I’m a teacher. I’m due in June. My maternity leave is 6 weeks at 90% pay then straight onto statutory until 9 months. After which 0 pay 😂🫠 yikes

Maybe it’s a 4 week month

maternity pay is weekly so if you are paid monthly some will be 4 weeks and some 5

@CrispAppleStrudels ok this makes some sense! I will contact HR to double check as I don’t understand my payslip. How annoying for you! I’m not looking forward to that.

Did you know you can use SPL to maximise how much you get paid? Essentially you "return to work" over the holidays, get paid for them then start a block of SPL when term starts again. Also, does your school not follow the Burgundy Book? That recommends 12 weeks at 50% pay following the first 6 weeks.

Thanks for the advice. I am at a private school so perhaps the SPL is not something they’d support. I will look into it though thank you

They don't have a choice RE SPL, it's your legal entitlement much the same as maternity leave. They are also quite limited in what say they have over when you take your 'blocks'.

https://www.teachersspl.co.uk/ this website is apparently the one you need. I didn't end up doing it because I wouldn't have ended up gaining much pay for what I thought would be a hassle but I've since heard that this website is very good, will do all the work for you for a small fee.
