Child Benefit - Earning over £50k

Hoping someone can help me understand the child benefit rules re earning over £50k.

My partners YTD income before tax is £41,000 so between now and April he will go over the £50,000 as he is likely to receive a large bonus in March. This won’t however be enough to take us over £60,000.

I know he will need to apply by October to complete a self assessment by January 2025 however I’m just trying to work out how much of the child benefit we are likely to have to pay back?

We currently have 1 child so for April 23-24 we will of received £1,248 in child benefit payments.

Thank you

10% of every 1k between 50k and 60k.
Its taxable income, so there are some deductions like pension contributions before the calculation.

A lot of my friends earning more than the threshold for child benefit don't bother claiming anymore because they don't see the point of paying tax for it.

This doesn't make any sense - it's tapered from £50k to £60k, it's not a cliff edge. I think some people mis-understand the rules, and so don't claim when they could.

It's also about to increase to being tapered from £60k to £80k.

If your partner's income is not going to be over 60k for the next tax year, then you will get the full child benefit and not have to pay any back. This is because the child benefit high income figure is changing from 50k to 60k at beginning of April

Sorry, just realised he will get bonus in March pushing it over £50k for l this tax year. If he has paid into a pension this tax year, this can help cancel out what you have to pay back of the child benefit on the tax return calculation.
