How to cope with fluctuating pay dates

Hello wise MNers,

I am going through the TUPE process ( a whole other thread ) my current employer pay me on a set date ( weekends not withstanding)
My new employer will pay me every 4 weeks which means my pay date will fluctuate.
This means things like DD and standing orders may come out before I get paid.

Is there a knack to sorting this out ?

The only way I can think of is to get my wages paid into a different account and then transfer enough money to cover outgoings on the day I get paid by my current employer

However I gave my new employer the bank details that I currently pay my bills out of ( I didn't know I was getting paid every 4 weeks at the time )
I don't really want to mess them about by changing bank details as their admin team don't seem very organised. 🙄

Any tips would be very welcome

I budget using YNAB (You Need A Budget) and following that system it doesn’t matter when bills come out as you just fund those budget lines whenever you were previously paid. Takes a couple of months to get with and it’s a learning curve - there’s more to it than just fluctuating pay dates - but it’s a life changing system when you’re with it

So when I became disabled and got put on benefits plus an ill health pension I suddenly had all my money coming in in dribs and drabs. (Some fortnightly, some every four weeks and some once a month). So I have it all paid into my bills account (because that's where it was setup to), I then transfer all but the bills money to a separate current account and some to a savings account. It's helped me budget really well.

My OH gets paid every 4 weeks. We always have a buffer of one months bills in the bills account then it doesn’t matter when he’s paid as we know all DD are covered.

My DH used to be paid every 4 weeks. He used to transfer the bills money to a different account every time he got paid. Worked really well.

Then once a year you get an 'extra' payday. We used to make sure some annual bills came out then. Always used to get the car MOTd on that month.

Bit of a faff to start with, setting up the extra account but then it's easy

I would set up a second account out of which all your DD and STOs go out. Each time you get paid pay a set amount into this account. This should enable you to have bills still go out monthly.

I was similar to this.
Didn't have a separate "bills" account, just made sure there was a float in my current account to cover all outgoings.
Came in handy when I went from weekly to monthly (in arrears) pay, everything was covered during the no-pay period.

Thanks for your tips everyone it's much appreciated.
@BuffaloCauliflower , how does it work ? Do you have a link for it ?

@Bagthepaperandshred , that sounds like it may work for me , even if its just until I have my head wrapped around things.

@Whiteandgreen6 , I live alone so there is only one wage coming in and unfortunately I don't have enough savings to create a buffer .

I do have a second account so I could swap all my bills to that account but it's a bit of a faff .

If you didn't want the faff of switching the direct debits, could you transfer your spending money to a different instead.

Same thing just a slightly different way of doing it

Wagechange · 29/01/2024 19:22

@VanWeezer , I think that's probably what I will do but it's going to be a pain , I currently paid on the 7th all my bills go out on the 10th, if my pay comes in early all well and good but if it doesn't come in till the say the 18th I am buggered. ( atm I have no idea what our 1st pay date is )

As I said upthread unfortunately I don't have enough savings to carry me over .

Well the pay fluctuating has been solved , I will be out of a job within the next few weeks ! Despite the lieing bastards saying that they won't be cutting hours or making any redundancies in my area only 2 weeks ago , all of us ( 14 ) are affected some getting hrs reduced so much its not viable for them to stay , others straight termination of contract due to 'business needs' and myself , apparently my job no longer exists. fucking cunts !
