LGPS pension under pay threshold

Hello!

I would appreciate any insight as I can’t find what I am looking for online…
I currently work 6 hours a week for my local council (I look after my toddler the rest of the time)

I have joined the LGPS pension scheme even though I only earn £4000 per year. Is it still worth me joining this? I would like to continue to have some kind of pension over these part time years even if it is only small.

I have another private pension with Aegon from my old employer with £6000 in.

I am 32.

when I look online around the LGPS pension it mentions ‘eligible job holders’ who earn over £10,000 a year. I do not meet this threshold but I am definitely part of the scheme as I have deductions each month.

thank you for reading!

Anyone who works for a council (with a contract of more than 3 months) is contractually entered into the LGPS even if their earnings are below the automatic enrolment threshold so it’s correct that you have been enrolled. The LGPS is one of the best schemes round so yes it’s worth staying in even though you’re not earning much now. In future your hours/pay may increase allowing you to build up more pension. Your employer is likely to be contributing over 20% to help fund your benefits, which you won’t get paid anywhere else if you opt out of the scheme.

The LGPS also includes a death in service lump sum of 3x your pay if anything were to happen to you which could be really helpful to your family.

Definitely stay enrolled. I did very part time work for a council for a while and when I get my statements I am still glad I enrolled
(I now work full time on v high pay but get different statements for each job so can still see the amounts from the old roles)
