Repaying child benefit

Orangebadger · 24/01/2024 14:53

We have gone over the threshold for child benefit last financial year and owe just over £400. Now I know we need to repay this but I thought it could be taken out of our tax next financial year, but HMRC has told us we need to pay this by the 31st.

Anyone have experience of this or know? Would really prefer to add it to tax if that's an option.

Which tax year?
If it's 2022/2023, its due by 31 Jan 2024
If it's 2023/2024, not due until 31 Jan 2025
HMRC can adjust your tax code to claw it back that way.

PickledPurplePickle · 24/01/2024 16:10

If it's for year ended 5 April 2023, then you needed to let HMRC know by 30 December 2023 to get it coded out through your tax code, otherwise you need to pay it by 31 January 2024

When you filled in the tax return, did you not choose the recover through tax code for next years pay option?

If not, it's due by 31st Jan 24.

Orangebadger · 24/01/2024 17:11

We did choose that option but when we have logged in to check everything it now says it's owed by next week. My DH called HMRC today to check and they have said it needs to be paid by the 31st.

These are the conditions. Was the tax return submitted before 30 December?

@MarmiteWine aaaah, thank you for this. I did not know submitting it before the end of December was a condition to repaying with PAYE. I'll know for next year if we need to do it.

Assuming your income is WAAAAAY over £50k, just get it paid, surely?

Really not waaaaay over. If it was we would have opted out of receiving it . We are literally just over the threshold at around £52K

Why would you assume that being as they owe £400 not the full amount? Shitty comment that only made you look stupid amongst other things. 🙄
