Income tax question

I've tried to get hold of hmrc but struggling and was wondering if anyone could advise.
I was self employed until dec 2023 and started a new job with an employer on 1 Jan 2024. I've not paid any tax on my pay since starting with my new employer and they have advised to declare my income alongside my self employed income when I do my tax return for 2024 - 2024 and from April 2024 I will start paying tax through them as normal.
Had anybody had experience of this and does it sound correct?

I was self employed and went to employed and started paying tax/NI straight away. I'm not sure what's right/wrong so hopefully you get more replies soon. It was a while ago now I changed

Your tax code will be cumulative giving you all your tax free allowances back to the start of April. That is why you're not paying any tax. It also means that you'll not get those tax free allowances to off set against your self employment income up to Dec 23. Try and contact HMRC via the webchat, that tends to be quicker, and ask for your code to be put on a month 1 basis. That isolates your pay/ allowance in the month.

@MrsJackRackam thank you. That makes sense.

I tried the web chat earlier but it wasn't live. I'll check again shortly.
