Home insurer has recorded "loss" because of a plaster crack?

Back in 2021 I suddenly noticed a small crack in the plaster on our wall and rang our home insurers (Tesco) to ask if I should get it inspected.

They said it didn't sound serious and advised just keeping an eye on it. They were right as it was only a 1mm crack and hasn't changed since then! (Pleased don't judge me for not knowing anything about wall cracks.)

I've just learned that Tesco have recorded this as a "loss" on our insurance record, and we have to declare it to future insurers.

Can this be right? I didn't spend any money, have anyone look at it or make a claim. It was literally just a chat.

Tesco are adamant that it has to be recorded permanently as a "loss" though.

I realise that I'm probably an idiot for having asked them, but has anyone else experienced this, or successfully challenged it?

It's damage that could have lead to a claim, so they will record it. But with no claim being made so no claims spend, it's a fairly minor mark against you for other insurers.

Declaring it to other insurers will depend on how they word their questions e.g. "have you made a claim in the last 5 years?" No. "Have you suffered loss or damage that could have lead to a claim in the last 5 years?" Yes.
