Getting a long distance lift - what would be a fair contribution

DB is giving me a lift to a family event 200 miles away. His wife is coming too, so there will be three of us in the car. I doubt whether they would ask me for the petrol money, but I think I should contribute. What proportion should I offer? I’ll buy the refreshments when we stop on the way too. Any thoughts would be appreciated. Thanks.

Half a full tank

If we were going anyway, there’s no way I’d want a contribution from a sibling. Unless I was hard up and they weren’t. Snacks/enroute coffee would be nice gesture.

My car costs about 15p a mile, so the full trip will cost about £60 for 400 miles.

So, given you want to offer, I would offer £20-£30 maybe and if they say no then insist on getting the coffees in at the service station.

In my family no one would offer or accept - but a service station coffee/m and s sandwich would be greatly appreciated.

Agree with this

If I'd have been driving the distance anyway, I wouldn't want a contribution. If I was specifically bringing them, then a contribution would be welcome if I was going 200 miles round trip.

Are either or both of you hard up? If he is and you’re not I’d give about £30, if you are and he’s not I’d just do refreshments and be a cheeky fucker, if you both are I’d agree on an accurate amount.

I’d buy a £50 gift card for M&S.

LordyMe · 14/01/2024 23:19

£20 sounds easy and fair. You could hand it to him as you jump in the car.

Half the petrol.
