Having a marital breakdown and left to raise DC on my own and no support. I had to go bankrupt as all bills were in my name....lesson learnt! I am a month off the 6 year mark..What happens next, do I have to inform anyone..Will l ever be allowed credit? I'm now earning well and much more secure..but 6 years with no credit or overdraft has been tough..is there light at the end of this tunnel?

Have you tried to get credit? I went bankrupt in 2020 and have a car on finance and a credit card for emergencies. The interest rate is vile but it is possible.

I went bankrupt 11 years ago and I was able to get credit cards within 2 years of the bankruptcy date. The 6 years refers to how long the bankruptcy stays on your credit file, but the bankruptcy itself is discharged after one year, so you are allowed to get credit after one year. I had no problems getting the cards aimed at poor credit (like Aqua). It was high interest but I would pay for normal expenses then clear the balance in full to rebuild my credit record.

People are advised to check their credit record with all the agencies to check that the bankruptcy has been removed from all the credit reference agencies and that all debts are marked correctly. I didn't have any issues with this, it all happened automatically. I'd do a soft search first if you are considering applying for credit.

These days my credit file looks pretty normal, there's no trace of the bankruptcy and I was able to get a mortgage and personal loan at normal rates.
